Who has the best list?

Post: # 770609Post Cairnsman »

I know this is a very subjective debate but in the aftermath of our win on Sunday I have been thinking about the "our list versus their (Cats) list" argument.

If you leave out the midfield we seem to have the Cats covered for talent in the ruck, up forward and based on this years performance our backline.

But my question is how can you apply an objective measure to this argument.

I'd be interested to know other peoples thoughts on this.

One thing we exposed with Geelong is that they lack big consistant key forwards, and rely on flankers and midfield more than we do. Johnson and Ablett are the core of Geelong -if one or both of them are out of action, they run out of options quickly.

I was thinking the same thing. Geelong are hardly besot with injuries at the moment, yet their depth is hardly mind bogling. Simon Hogan isn't exactly a walk up start in most other teams. Neither is David Johnson who he replaced.

Their midfield is superb, no doubting that. I don't reckon I've seen a better one, which is a big call I know. Midfield is the most important part of the ground, however I reckon we have them covered at both ends. Their 'spine' or goal to goal line is good to average. Ours is first class. WE have a top class full back in Max, an AA CHB in Fisher. A gun centreman in Hayes, the best CHF in Riewoldt, and a big solid consistent FF in Kosi. WE have one of the best if not the best Ruck combination in Gardiner and King. Geelong have an AA full back in Scarlett, a solid CHB and CHF and a very ordinary FF. They also have a great ruckman (who is injured and a very average ruckman.

The more I think about the weekend, the more I believe that we can beat them next time as well. The last game was about belief. We now have that Belief.

If we lose Riewoldt he is irreplaceable, however I believe the same applies to Mooney, because of their structure. Other than that I reckon we can cover most possies comfortably as long as the injury list doesn't get out of control.

our big forwards ... reiwoldt, kosi and gardiner ... were the point of difference.

the cats will have walked away from this match with a lot of doubts about whether they can stop them next time.

their midfield is superb, no doubt ... but you have to put it on the board. they couldn't.

They have 7 players in the top 30 in the AFL IMO.....so at the top end they are superb......have a deep team.....not a deep list

BTW you cannot have a star studded Fwd line with that midfield.....the Cap isn't 20M

Ablett: 1
Steve Johnson: 5-10
Scarlett: 10-15
Bartel: 10-15
Selwood: 15-20
Chapman: 20-25
Corey: 25-30

IMO we have 7 in the top 40

Riewoldt: 2
Hayes: 10-15
Fisher: 15-20
Dal Santo: 15-20
Montagna: 20-25
Goddard: 30-35
Koschitzke: 35-40

We have the best list because ours includes real key forwards.

Gilbert easy! Harley is close to retirement and it's starting to show.

Its a tragedy that Luke Ball no longer apeas on that list of yours BigMart. There remains something wrong with the man, he got thrashed by Selwood...a younger version of the player he should've been!

Scarlett is no longer anywhere near top 30 in the comp, let alone 10-15, imo...

Both Goddard and Montagna are far better players than Scarlett, on current form and going foward...

Hell, Gilbo must be mounting a strong case for being in the best handful of defenders in the league...

He pretty much starts every game on the pine now...

Clearly he is still hampered by something, or is forever severely restricted...

I still think the best way to look at both sides is backs, mids and forwards. We beat them on the forward line even with Johnson playing because we have 2 very good talls. They get us in the midfield but not by a huge amount. We are one Luke Ball off being level. The backlines are very close indeed.

Maybe that isnt the best way to work out who is better because I think if both sides make the GF it will be a draw. In other words luck with injury and on the day could easily decide the GF winner this year if both sides play each other. Until then heaps of work to be done.
