Why Milney Comes Straight Back When Fit

Post: # 755639Post bergholt »

it's obvious when watching matches across his entire career that milney is pretty irreplaceable, buzzing around the feet of the forwards inside 50. the stats also show this. and this is why, when he's fit, he has to come straight back into the side - through sandy, as some have suggested, is just a waste.

career:

2001: 27.20 total, per game 1.6 goals, 9.3 disp, 2.9 marks, 0.8 tackles
2002: 50.11 total, per game 2.4 goals, 10.7 disp, 2.3 marks, 1.3 tackles
2003: 26.19 total, per game 1.9 goals, 8.4 disp, 2.0 marks, 0.9 tackles
2004: 46.22 total, per game 2.2 goals, 7.5 disp, 2.7 marks, 1.2 tackles
2005: 61.20 total, per game 2.5 goals, 11.2 disp, 3.5 marks, 1.5 tackles
2006: 29.29 total, per game 1.3 goals, 12.4 disp, 3.7 marks, 1.8 tackles
2007: 32.22 total, per game 1.4 goals, 12.3 disp, 4.4 marks, 1.7 tackles, 0.68 goal ass
2008: 60.32 total, per game 2.5 goals, 13.9 disp, 4.2 marks, 1.5 tackles, 0.71 goal ass
2009: 20.9 total, per game 2.2 goals, 13.3 disp, 4.8 marks, 2.7 tackles, 0.67 goal ass

just looking at the last two years' stats, he's averaged around about 3 goals contributed every game, from kicking them himself and assists. and he's improved his tackling to 2.7 tackles a game this year, which ranks him 13th in the side for that stat.

goals kicked per game 2009:

riewoldt: 3.18
koschitzke: 2.70
milne: 2.22
schneider: 1.36
goddard: 1.00
mcqualter: 0.82
gardiner: 0.80
dal santo: 0.64
gram: 0.60
jones, geary: 0.55
montagna, gwilt: 0.45

goals contributed per game 2009:

riewoldt: 3.73
koschitzke: 2.90
milne: 2.89
schneider: 2.00
goddard: 1.82
dal santo: 1.73
montagna, mcqualter: 1.64
hayes, gram: 1.20
gwilt, jones: 1.18
geary: 1.09
gardiner: 0.90

one of the reasons the saints are on top undefeated is the twin towers up forward, obviously. but the little fella at their feet is pretty important too. schneider is decent but plays further up the ground, and isn't as productive in milne's permanent forward pocket role.

so he comes straight back in when fit.

5 prelims in 7 years. 40 wins from 49 games.
2009 and 2010 were 2 of the 5 best years ever by the St.Kilda FC.
Thanks for all your efforts Saints.

Milney's awesome.

How many small forwards would you take ahead of the little guy?

You can see the pressure builds on our forward line when he's not around IMO, especially over the past couple of weeks. He's a much welcomed player to bring back into the side - tonight he'll carve them up!

When they created LENNY HAYES (in the shadow of Harvs) they forgot to break the mold (again)- hence the Supremely Incredible Jack Steven!!

Milne is FAR too underated as a small fwd....Although i'm not really complaining as he constantly walks the walk.
If he were an aboriginal he would be rated MUCH higher imo

Does anyone have any stats on his performances against Carlton or which are the teams that he gets his highest scores against?

I was at a party the last we played them and never saw any replays, but Milne kicked 5 didn't he?

He killed them in Round 2 last year as well - stood up and kicked several goals when the game was in the balance to win it for us.
