Maguire In Spotlight For Tackle

Post: # 726936Post Beno88 »

MAGUIRE IN SPOTLIGHT FOR TACKLE
Monday, April 20th, 2009 at 2:12 pmBY CHRIS WEAVER

ST KILDA defender Matt Maguire could come under investigation for a tackle laid during a VFL match over the weekend.

The 24 year-old Saint was playing for VFL affiliate Sandringham on Saturday, when he laid a tackle that left Frankston opponent Clinton Proctor to be stretchered off with a neck injury.

Proctor was one of three Dolphin players admitted to hospital with concussion, all resulting from tackles laid by Sandringham opponents.

Frankston general manager Bryan Mace told the Frankston Standard Leader that they would ask the VFL to investigate the incidents, including the Maguire tackle.

“It just seemed unusual that you get three neck injuries like that. Whether the tackling has been done a little bit differently, I’m not too sure,â€

nothing in it. The guy still had the ball when he was taken to ground, it was just a hard tackle nothing else

I would think the Leigh Fisher one was more contentious than the Goose one.

Spot on. Phil Cleary had a bee in his bonnet about it mumbling something about big guys on little guys....but what do little blokes expect if they get caught by big blokes whilst holding the ball. Drop the politician's hat Phil and tell us what you would have instructed your players to do when you were a coach.

You have got to be kidding me...

Harden the F**K up....seriously.

Asking the AFL to investigate because we are tackling too hard...

If this goes further....this game is just falling into an abyss....

Strong tackling in the ressies tells me the message is getting through and the players now if they want a recall they have to be ferocious...

Haha. Phil Cleary?? Serious?? He would've dragged one of his players when he was capt/coach in the good ol 70's VFA comp if they hadn't actually de-capitated a player during a tackle!!! Boy, pot , kettle, black stuff that is.

It's illegal to pin an opponets arms and drive them into the ground.

However, Goose slung him while he still had the ball. He didn't drive him, but slung him.

Fierce. Brutal. Highly aggressive. Fair. And simply brilliant.

Ahh you remember Cleary too eh Yipper? A thug in an era where Barry Hall would have been merely "hard at it"

When the tackle occurred Cleary mentioned that in his day he'd have made sure one of his bigger teammates would have gone in to "sort out" Goose for tackling a smaller player. On so you can only tackle hard blokes your own size?? Give it a rest

If my memories of Phil are correct, you could substitute "king hit" for "sort out"

That is exactly what happened...interesting hearing Bryan Mace have a whinge,,,I recall Robert mace belting Alex Marcou behind play when playing for Frankston against Springvale...wonder if that upset Bryan Mace

The Sandy boys are following the lead of the St Kilda guys and tackling as hard as I've seen them...what Matt Maguire did was to lead by example and legally tackle the guy with the ball...if he didn't have the ball then there would have been grounds for complaint

Well done Matt Maguire....there will be some VFL players taking a sideways step if they see the Goose about to lay a tackle on them

Phil Cleary!!!

I remember the Coodabeens wrote a song about before Williamstown smashed Coburg in a GF in the 80's...Sung to the tune of "The Happiest Girl in the whole USA".

Shine on me sunshine, Zippity doo
We're playing the Seagulls today.
And I'm the filthiest player
In the whole VFA.

Fitting!

Big Phil always sides with the unaligned VFL sides when they play the AFL aligned teams and just listening to him for 2 minutes is enough to make me want stick a knitting needle in each ear as deep as it will go.

Last time I checked footy didnt have weight divisions so anyone can tackle anyone else.

"Frankston general manager Bryan Mace"

Is he any relation to Robbie Mace ?

I seem to recall Robbie (the best ever number 60 to play for the Saints) also came from Frankston (or went there at the end of his career) ???

I used to have a jar of Mace in my spice rack with a big "60" scrawled on it :D

Clinton Proctor weekend footballer fairly tackled by full time professional AFL footballer Matt Maguire.
Outcome was to be expected.

The VFL should investigate Bryan Mace for putting someone who doesn't stand a chance when tackled on the the same oval as a professional AFL footballer.

No malice was intended, I was watching the game, good hard tackle by Maguire hope the Frankston guy is ok though hit his head pretty hard.
Can’t wait to see Matt out there doing that to the AFL blokes :)

I'll bet some of the lady forumites would like to see Maguire's tackle in the spotlight
