Should we be recruiting for "Passion" ?

The best thing I read about Tom Lynch is that he is a passionate Saints fan.
- He was at the 97 GF.
- He watched our games from the outer last year
- He screamed for the Saints
- He shares our hopes
- He shares our pain

- He is one of US

Except that he has talent !!!

I always maintain that any of the posters on this site would be fantastic footballers if we only had the same skills and bodies as the current players.
Not a stupid self evident statement.
Because if we had their skills and bodies we would be better than them.
â€¦ Because we also have PASSION.

I believe that Tom Lynch will be a better player for us than he would be anywhere else.
Why ?
Because he is more likely to put his body on the line in a crunch situation for the club he bleeds for than for another club where he would just be a paid employee.

On that theory, if I was managing the recruiting
(with the possible exception of a first round pick where the skill difference might just be too big to overlook)
I would on each selection
- recruit the next best recruit that barracks for The Saints
- recruit for PASSION
- get a team with a "Nathan Bourke" mentality.

It's an interesting point, although I guess a lot of players become very passionate Saints people once they join the club.

Fraser Gehrig as an example ... spent 6-7 years with the Eagles but is one of the most passionate Sainters you will find.

I guess it is a professional industry and ability has to come first. But if there is a fine line then passion could definitely be a factor.

I believe the pssion lynch brings is his passion for the contest. I like how stewie encouraged him to be more vocal with his leadership.

Can't wait to see him and BJ hitting bodies and telling the opposition to go get stuffed!!!

Great to have Tom with us, but there is no way that his passion for St Kilda had anything to do with us drafting him.

He was the best player available at pick 13 and it is a bonus that his family are all mad Sainters.

But
What if Tom was the second best available at pick 13 ???

Would you still apply the formula and go for the slightly more highly rated player ?
Or would you recruit for passion and recruit Tom?

I would go for Tom.
Little downside.
But plenty of upside.
- more likely to play with passion
- more likely to be loyal
- more likely to sacrifice potential salary if salary cap issues

I did put in a caveat that for a high draft pick where there is a significant skill difference you take the best.

But what about pick 40?
There might be a dozen players with very little between them.
If one of them is a "Sainter" then why not take them ahead of the others with slightly better beep tests or vertical leaps ?

BJ a blue, he has passion for the saints. whilst it would be great to play for the club your barracked for, i can see 81 of those kids will now barrack for the team they play for and not barracked for as a kid....

Who's the most passionate, hard working, courageous St Kilda player of the last 20 years? Harves? Essendon Supporter. Burke? Richmond Supporter (I think). Hayes? Swans supporter.

It's a nice theory, but once recruited to an AFL club strength of character carries a lot more weight than just who they supported. Harves, Burke and Hayes had that character that no matter where they were drafted they would have busted a gut every day for the club and stayed loyal to the end. Lynch, from what I've seen, has that character as well, which is great, but it doesn't mean that if he went to a different club he wouldn't have worked just as hard and put his body on the line just as much.

Rubbish...I don't know how much sport you guys have played but as soon as you feel part of a team you play for your teammates like the world depends on it. It's psudo psychology to assume that you would commit more to a team because you supported it as a kid. I know I (like almost any one on this forum) if my son got drafted by an AFL club, I would support that team wholehearted (retaining a soft spot for the Saints).

I would hope that Lynch at pick 13 was the best available talent at that stage of the draft and that this was the ONLY reason that he was drafted!

if recruiting for passion comes into play by the way they play the game then absolutely, it just means that they got drafted for a reason, obviously by playing with passion for the team they were in before they got drafted was an obvious choice...

There maybe some truth in the Lynch case as some were surprised he went that high in the draft
On the flip side I always thought we should have got Salopek for the very same reasons.

I hear what you're saying Enrico Misso. I, too, believe that something a little extra could come from a player who has the opportunity to pull on the jumper that he loves.
I played 3rds footy for a team that wore Saints colours (which was the main reason I played for them)
Every time I wore those magnificent colours into battle, I felt 10ft tall & gave it everything... + a little bit more.
Wearing Pluggers number helped aswell!

this was the barry Brooks debacle

we got goddard for pick 1 after the Blues lost it for cheating

We traded pick 6 and something to Port for Barry Brooks, and they picked up salapek...
