harvey made GT cry

Post: # 619234Post bigcarl »

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/ ... 42,00.html

FORMER St Kilda coach Grant Thomas was so moved by Robert Harvey's gut-busting contribution to the Saints' 2005 qualifying final win over Adelaide that he was reduced to tears. Harvey contributed 31 disposals and three goals to the eight-point win over the Crows at AAMI Stadium, a performance Thomas described as "herculean".

"The one defining moment that I remember Harvs by - and I've got to be honest and say it brought me to tears after the game - was his herculean performance against Adelaide," Thomas said.

"I didn't think he had that performance in him.

"He willed us over the line with some of the greatest gut-busting running you ever wish to see. You had to see it from where he started and where he finished up with the ball, and then you'll get an appreciation, because television only shows when the ball was in his hands and not where he started from."

an expansion of this article can be found on GT's blog- which i don;t normally read BUT provides a great insight int Harves

http://wwos.ninemsn.com.au/Blog.aspx?bl ... ments=true
He does not have a nasty bone in his body but he was unbelievably nasty to his opponents. It was a nastiness that cut much deeper than a stray elbow, fist or shirtfront – he pummelled them into the ground and challenged the very core of their existence – their integrity. He would take them on a journey that they all knew they couldn’t survive – the courage to provide maximum effort with severe pain.

A man is judged by his legacy and there will be no greater legacy left in the minds of all players, all coaches, all staff and all supporters of this game than the humility, selflessness and magnificent efforts of Robert Harvey – unforgettable.

Grant Thomas is a former St Kilda coach and a leading authority on all things AFL.

Thanks for the link. A good read.

I also liked: He had the same off field issues and drama’s that everyone has but when he stepped onto the arena he was transformed into something quite separate from the any other person.

Great lesson to other players.

Great article.

I'm a massive fan of Thommo. Top man and St Kilda through and through.

He should be doing special comments for Foxtel, 7 or 10 such is his insight into the game imo.

Good on you GT.

Infinitely more passion for stkilda than the current coach. It's great to see.

I'm not sure how much RL buying a Saints scarfe and yelling "Carn Saints" is going to do for anyone.

The only issue RL should have to address is whether the club is acheiving what it should with the resources available and progressing in a sustainable manner.

I'm not a big wrap for RL but he doesn't have to become a 'fan' of the club.

He will learn to love the club through the relationships he makes there.
I'm sure Leigh Matthews had barely given Brisbane a thought before he signed a contract with them yet would feel part of the fabric now.

He is getting done over already with the half-baked performances of his team mates. He deserves better.

Very odd comment.

Banger has always been a big occassion player....and often plays well when the rest of the team is struggling.

It would seem from that comment that GT already questioned in his own mind Harve's ability back then.

Maybe the comnments earlier this year (the ones concurring with Dermutt's premature ejac assessment on Harve's) were more ingrained than first imagined?

Bleeds for the club...

Cries for the club...
"I think I got inside and I think I helped him with some very delicate issues as well. I'd like to think I was a major influence and big help in his life."
...er... flogs for the club?

Now you want him to put his hand in his pocket for the club?!

Ingrate.

100% Agree! Pity others don't see it this way.

Truth is that even if RL came out and stated that he loved the club, the supporters, and is glad he joined... he'll be accused of lying because he didn't want the job in the first place.

Nail- hammer- head.

This is the guts of it.
