Some one told the SKFC that John Beverage was the best in the business and they believed it for nearly 20 years.
Plus we are by far the worst club in the way we hold on to players who needed to cut

Not every pick can be star simple fact, every club has high draft pick duds


John Beveridge was regarded the best in the business (not just by St Kilda) but he also had the smallest budget in the business and one of the smallest player development budgets as well. He basicly worked alone travelling to see matches around the country when most teams had a recruiter in every state and normally several in Victoria. What he did with what he had was remarkable.


Oh and he has nothing to do with hanging on to players too long (Don't think you meant to hold the finger at him for that but wanted to make sure).

Oh goodness, I'd like to see anybody else do any better with the amount of cash JB has been given....

His job is to pick the best young talent, just because they don't develop doesn't mean that JB is to blame, don't we have some developmental staff like Collingwood do?

Sorry just can't agree with you on those two, they tried their guts out for the club and bled for the team!
Fergs and McQ have never really been given the chance to prove themselves over an extended period unlike the likes of others who are given game after game and never prove themsleves worthy to wear the RWB!

For my 20 cents, I think the club has recruited poorly in the last couple of years and now it's caught up with us:

For example: Barry Brooks trade for pick 6 to Port. They got Stephen Selopeck (who was keen to come to the Saints) now we got 0 from that

Our 1st round pick Andrew McQualter, tough, but slow.

Watts, another 1st round pick now gone.

R.Clarke, poor decsion maker, sentiment got him here.

Plus all the years we did not use the rookie draft (GT thought it was a waste of time), who know who we could have got in that time.

We need SPEED & SKILL.

Look how the Doggies have jumped over us, they have speed to burn & great foot skills.

Another mistake is the fact I think we have too many players from other clubs. Time to draft young talent with speed. Not sure we can afford too many long term projects like McEvoy, when player like Rioli are having dramatic impact in their 1st year, and was availabe when our pick came along in the draft.

Sure hindsight is good, but we are way too slow without it really being addressed with our 1st picks..

Also the player that came in yesterday gave us almost zero... Roo clearly needs more time, geary may get there, Fiora.. GONE ...
