Milne...and the Lions

Post: # 571681Post saintsRrising »

Selection may be interesting today.

While the focus has been on our talls, GTrain retiring, roo being injured and the push to bring in Ben.....we need to remember that the Lions struggle against small forwards and in holding Milne

The Lions do not habe many options to play on small forwards and are better set up to cover mediums and talls.

McGrath is the likely match up...but he has flu and so is in doubt.and if he plays may not be at his best.

It would not surprise me to see Lyon give a great deal of thought to trying exploit this chink in the Lions....and to try and free up Milne in the process.

Will he play Milney in one pocket....and then try and cause damage in the other pocket too?

This may mean starting Schneider in the other pocket rather than the wing. Though Scheiders last 2 games have not been the best.

Other options may be selecting Ferg......or CJ....or rotaing mids through the other FP.

they have a very tall immobile backline so it would be good to see us chock up with smalls who can run them around a bit

so milne, schnieder, cj and possibly nds/bally rotating through at various times

they have players like patfull, roe and macdonald who enjoying running off playing unnaccountable football and having smalls in the forward 50 would run them around and keep it that way

We also need to keep the ball in our forwardline as much as possible, so CJ is a must-select this week, for his pressure on their ball-carriers.

Yes but I am examing the forward line here....and if the game is tight from competitive midfields it could well be that the better functioning forward line will get one team over the line.

remember also that the Tigers thumped us in the midfield, but that our better forward line won us the game....and that we thumped the Cat's midfield, but their better functioning forward line won them that game.

Winning midfields are very nice to have..but if you can't kicka winning score you lose.

Time to try something different like Scnider & Milne in F pockets
Talls Kosi , Nick & Goddard across half forward .

Can always revert to usual set up if its not working.....

Birss should get MacDonald this week. He excelled at the defensive-forward job last week on Heath Shaw, and Macdonald is the most damaging of the Lions running backmen. Reduce Macdonald's impact, while trying to snag one or two himself, would be a good return from Birss.

BJ started at CHF last week and looked lost.

When he moved back to the backline he looked good and even kicked a goal.

Leave him in the backline.

While Adcock mainly plays in the midfield these days, he doesn't do a bad job in the backline and if dogga is firing i wouldn't be surprised to see Jed go to him. I still think we'd be able to exploit this by putting Schneids in the other pocket meaning the Lions potentially lose a strong rover to the backline as well as having another small forward to worry about..
I guess we'll see how it all pans out on Sunday.
