I can't help feeling (maybe stating the obvious) but John Worsefold would be NOTHING!! if Judd and Cousins never played under him....

Players make the coach in terms of winning a premiership. You simply need the crop to be there to be able to get a flag.

Grant Thomas made the players, back in the day of 04 etc...That sort of thing can only get you so far. Though at the end of the day, you need certain players with flare, instinct and unpredictability that a coach simply sit backs and ''guides'', James Hird, and now Ablett for example

They're both important, but the players much more so.

Put me (an average supporter) in charge of an AFL team, and Kevin Sheedy (a supercoach) in charge of a TAC cup team, and I guarantee my team will come out on top. Unless I get given Melbourne, of course.

Percy Jones couldn't do with that great Carlton side. However, these coaches do need players, as they said earlier this year JC himself, couldn't coach Melbourne to a win.

When every player I have is better than every player they have, and my full-forward can snap their fullback in half, and my rovers are stronger than their ruckman, I don't think my complete lack of tactical or inspirational ability will matter . . .

It is really too hard to say, because there are way too many variables considering a coach has to mentor 44 different blokes, there are going to be an unbelievable range of issues involved, both personal and professional.

I'm not sure of the exact details but keep this in mind, in roughly 1999 Brisbane got the spoon, towards the end of that year they appointed Leigh Matthews, the next year they made the finals, the year after they won the flag.

I have absolutely NO DOUBT that Leigh Matthews could win a flag this year if he had any of Adelaide, Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, Kangaroos, St.Kilda or Sydney...

Just on those ratios, in my organisation there would (roughly) be one head coach in charge of two specialist coaches, who would then be in charge of about three to four sub-coaches each who would be responsible for the oversight of about 5-6 players each, and answerable to the head coach.
