Rat of Tobruk
Flip Shelton April 19, 2008 12:00am

MY grandfather, Jack Shelton, was a Saint and a Rat. A small faded photograph of him sits on my dad's chest of drawers. It's been there in that very same position for as long as I can remember.

All the Shelton boys played footy, and Jack went on to play for St Kilda in 1920-21, when he was only 15, and again in 1925-29. He played 66 games and kicked 153 goals, and there are several "colourful' anecdotes written about him in a book documenting the history of the St Kilda Football Club and also in Fallen, by Jim Main and David Allen.

In one such incident he was besieged by Geelong supporters when St Kilda won a game at Kardinia Park. He was hit by an umbrella and another Geelong fan pulled a picket from the fence and advanced towards him.

"Shelton smartly dodged the blow, grabbed the picket and held it to defend himself," a report said. He was suspended for six weeks. ">>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
