Percentage a worry longterm

Post: # 551428Post saint patrick »

Hawthorn 159.08
Geelong 155.73
Bulldogs 144.39
Sydney 159.18
ST.KILDA 99.58
Collingwood 112.16
Adelaide 109.31
North 104.63
....................
Richmond 102.24

With 33 shots to 17 we missed a golden opportunity to really bury the Essendon last night.A wins a win but watching the replay there were at least 6 regulation goals that were missed at various stages.Should have been at least a 60 point win. This degree of discrepency between us and the teams we will be vying with could be critical come round 22.Would hate to see it cost us a doulble chance or even a spot in the eight.

Would like to see us develop a bit of mongrel, killer instinct and really press home some big wins like good teams do...

Keep the foot on the throat boy's....there are decades of pay back still owed

We had 33 shots and kicked 18.15.123

Geelong last week kicked 21.10.136

So if we aim for 2 goals to 1 point we'd look for 22.11.143

Id be happy with that, bring back plugger.....teach the boys how to kick straight.

Right call. % doesnt matter at the moment. Can go up and down very quickly this early in the year.

Great Point

At least its a positive that we are having so many shots

The negative is this has been happening for too long

Who goes and watches training?

Are they practicing goal kicking?

However the % is based on for/against, and every goal missed now is just as critical at the end of Round 22 as a goal missed in the last round. Every goal scored now (and every goal scored against) is exactly as critical in calculating the final %.

So don't think % isn't important now.

If we were to win every remaining game by 6 goals (118 to 82), our % at the end of the season would be 132.5%, whereas if we won all 22 games by the same margin our % would be 143.9%. That shows the impact of the 5 results so far this season.

I'll tell you who they should bring back for goalkicking coach. Jason Heatley.... had a very simple technique almost textbook. Loved nothing more than sitting behind the goal at Waverley and watching Heatley's 50 metre punts ease through the sticks with only a couple of revolutions of spin.

Im pretty sure he is still around in Melbourne somewhere so wouldnt be hard to give him a couple of quid BT style at Collingwood to sort this worrying problem out.

Players can certainly be retrained in licking for goal - look at what Huddo did for Stewart Loewe. Hopeless and unreliable before Huddo, far more accomplished afterwards.

Casey Scorp, how can you calculate pecentage on six goal wins without knowing the final score of the match? A six goal win if you kick 7 goals and they kick 1 is a huge percentage boost! is it not?

Maybe this year?

until everyone has played everyone the % can be a little skewed. Some teams have not played the likes of melbourne, port, west coast and freo who have given up alot of points so far.

You're correct, you do need to know final scores as well as margins to calculate %.

However, I did show the final score of matches for my hypothetical 6 goal wins - 118 to 82.

Essendon have conceded 80 goals in their 4 games before playing us.

SO....we were playing against a very leaky defensive outfit.....just like Carlton!

I'd like us to back up it up with 15+ goals on a regular basis against a range of teams, not just bottom four ones.

Our defence is OK, and may be even better now after Max's little bath-called-Lloyd!

Really the low percentage is a reflection of our inaccuracy - the real worry is that this inaccuracy may cost us the 4 points. Whilst I don't believe it was the difference last week v the Cats, we really should have been closer. There may be games this year we lose that we should win if our accuracy doesn't improve.
