Yes I know this is a strange comment/topic after a win, but does anyone know what was the story behind those announcements?
What type of problem could connex be having that couldn't be rectified in the hour they had since the first announcement? Or were they still clearing peak hour traffic out of the city at 9pm?
Were the trains worse than usual? Any stories, please share.
Also if anyone could reassure me about King/Gardiner that would be good.

i thought maybe a bomb scare or something. when i walked back into the city the elizabeth street/flinders street station underpass was closed.
There was an intruder on the tracks near the Russell St overpass at about 6pm
This affected all trains incoming from Lilydale/Belgrave. Some sat in the yards for close to an hour and many people missed the start of the game
After the game I heeded the warning, retired to Livewire and got to Southern Cross about about 11.30. Waited 5 mins for a very crowded Frankston train to arrive. A stop-start trip home but was home shortly after midnight
Someone died on the tracks between Richmond and Flinders St apparently. I left Windsor at 6 15 and finally got to my seat on the siren for quarter time, at 8 10. That included a walk to the dome from Flinders St cos there were no trains going anywhere.
www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au updated 7.20pm wrote:Due to a police operation within the Russell Street extension vacinity, behind Federation Square, metropolitan trains are experiencing significant delays of up to 40 minutes.
Services running on the Epping and Hurstbridge lines will be running anti-clockwise through the city loop until further notice.
All other metropolitan trains will be running as scheduled.
It is not known at this stage when normal services will resume.
I was also held up, coming from the other side of town (Werribee Line). We just stood still between North Melbourne and Southern cross for 15 mins. Didn't get into the ground until around 12 mins into the first term.
Very sad occurrence if the incident reported here actually happened, and caused these delays.

Well i caught the train from epping it stopped at clifton hill at about 6.30pm. Apparently there was a "trespasser on the tracks" between collingwood and jolimont. Whatever that means. Assuming someone got killed on the tracks. But not sure why it would hold up the other lines ?
I am led to believe there was a "threat of suicide" around the 5 p.m. mark.
I expect it was possibly carried out.
From what I'm told, if that sort of thing is done during "negotiations" it is considered a "death in custody" and for obvious reasons is more thoroughly investigated and scrutinised.
Generally these incidents have the tracks open within a couple of hours, but may explain why it went for 5 hours or so.
I think that Werribee trains would have been scheduled to go on to Lilydale lines etc. so would result in massive re-scheduling on Connex's behalf.
My train was halted at North Melbourne @ 1905 as were all the others from the West and Northwest, so had to walk to telstra dome with lots of Essendon supporters. Only 20 minutes walk though and made it for the start with seconds to spare.
If there was a casualty somewhere, glad he wasn't the sort who wanted to take others with him. I think that will happen again.
can we lock this topic, we are now are aware of what caused the delays and such an unfortunate incident should not be discussed in a football forum imo.
yes, i was delayed on a frankston train at richmond at 7:15pm. I heard about the this from another passanger on the way home. Sad news and probably explains why no articles are written about it.

I heard 3rd hand that this was the reason
edit the news said the person was talked into giving himself up, which is great news for their family
also heard on the news- the cut the power to try and avoid him further injury I would assume -and he eventually was calmed and taken under care at 11.30 last night.
i heard from someone today who was going from richmond to box hill that when she went past the time i dont know she saw a asian lady lying down on the ground sucking on something and she was delayed going to box hill
MIssed all but a minute of the first quarter because of the delays. I caught a bus from Elwood to Richmond. Got on a train, sat about 100m from the station waiting for our train to move and then got to Flinders. We then hopped on the first train we could find going to Spencer and we didn't move for 30 minutes. BY this time the game had just started. We were told that we hadn't yet found a driver for the train..... the 7:05 Werribee going through the loop..... So, we had to walk from Flinders to Spencer. There was no way that we were gonna deal with Connex.
I got on the train last night at around 11 o'clock on the Belgrave/Lilydale platform and a train came as expected without any delays.
So I too was left to assume that the hold up had been dealt with.
Sad news though, if it is correct.
