Fire damages York Park stadium
March 30, 2008 - 6:38AM
Source: ABC
Authorities are investigating what started a blaze which caused significant damage to a sports stadium in Launceston in northern Tasmania.

The fire gutted the change rooms underneath the heritage-listed "Northern Stand" at York Park Oval.

Authorities were called to the blaze just before three o'clock.

Firefighter, John Carter, says it is too early to speculate on the cause of the fire.

"We're looking at certain areas, but we've still got to investigate it and of course to get in there to investigate it we need to get an engineer to have a closer look at it before we can get in there," Mr Carter said.
The stadium is due to host an AFL game between Hawthorn and the Adelaide Crows in a fortnight.

The stadium's manager says the game will still go ahead

Fire at Aurora Stadium
12:26 PM Sun 30 March, 2008

AN AFL match due to be played in a fortnight will go ahead despite an extensive fire at Launceston's Aurora Stadium in the early hours of this morning.

Fire destroyed almost half the historic northern grandstand at the oval which serves as Hawthorn's second home.

But ground manger Robert Groenewegen said the April 13 match between the Hawks and Adelaide would proceed despite a damage bill of between $300,000 and $500,000.

Three bays of the eight-bay standing room only grandstand had been destroyed, reducing the ground's capacity from 20,000 to 19,000, he said.
