Watson on Gilbert

Post: # 536296Post rexy »

Tim Watson said on SEN this morning that when Sam Gilbert fills out he will be the only player or best suited player in the league to match up on Lance Franklin.

Fair rap for the kid, even if it is from Timid.

Disagree with that, Franklin will be too tall for him. Hope so though.

Heard that too, very interesting call. He said something along the lines of "he's getting some super coaching down there," I guess referring to SOS.
He's also tipped Montagna for the brownlow. Another big call but maybe an astute one if Joey has a consistent year, and drills a few more of those goals on the run.

Franklin is only 2cm taller.

However im sure his reach would be a lot bigger than Gilbert's.

I'm not sure about that. According to the saints site, Gilbert is taller than Riewoldt, which is obviously not true.

two things are certain.

1. gilbert has the potential to be a very very good afl player
2. tim watson is an idiot.

all the rest is conjecture.

Gilbo has 14 more games before we come up against Hawks in Round 16.

At the moment, I would think Buddy is two seasons ahead of Gilbo.

By round 16 when we front them, if he takes Buddy, I hope I'm wrong.

At the moment Buddy is a drawcard - he needs a good flogging from a youngster.....

Buddy is 6'6. Riewoldt is 6'5. There's no way Gilbert is as tall as these two. How old is Gilbert? He might have a tiny bit of growing still in him.

Roo is about 195.....i'm 193 and years ago at the sandy night club i stood next 2 him at the bar and the boys said he had about an inch on me.....

Gilbert i dunno.....but LeBron James is 23 and was 6'8" last year and he just reported the other week hes grown an inch.....to 6'9" to go with 117kgs.....

Gilbert may get taller.....

The height means nothing.

Max can play tall.

Goose can play tall or small.

Chips and BJ can do either too.

But Buddy, I reckon, is gonna be a superstar by then (not as good as Braddy Johnson  ) who will need two of our backs to cover him.

By round 16 if his career goes according to plan this year, Buddy will have kicked 68 goals and will be having 9 shots at goal per game.

Who will cover him?

First reaction - Watson is just trying to look smart by saying a name that nobody expects.

Second reaction, the thing that sets both players apart for mine is that for big guys, they're very good at ground level. So maybe there's something in it.

Final thought, maybe in time. At the moment, Gilbert has a lot of improving to do defensively if he's going to be a key defender... Buddy Franklin has elite skills and his only real weakness ATM is that the most likely guy to beat Buddy is Buddy.

I wouldn't be comparing the size in height, but more body size. Have you seen the build on Buddy? His arms are massive and he's as agile as anything. Gilbert would not be strong enough to play on Buddy for a couple of years. It's not just our backline though, every side is going to struggle to find a decent match up on Buddy. The best plan is making sure the midfield have little chance of getting delivery to him because if that footy enters the hawks forward line, Franklin is going to be a hard man to stop.

have played on each other at VFL level and was a very good contest. Franklin kicked a couple but gilbert ran off him and set up some goals.

I think gilbert and BJ are our swingmen, the new utility. Love the fact that this week we could play him on judd, run him on waite or send him forward. It's a great situation to be in.

Gilbert measured in at 193.7cm at draft camp. It's reasonable to think he'd have made it to 194 in the time since then. He's about the same height as Riewoldt either way you look at it as 1 or 2 cms is practically nothing in terms of height.

Yeah nah pleasing positive
