Grounds that could be played on IF World cup here
if they were to succeed in getting the world cup here and that ruled out MCG, Telstra dome and maybe Princes Park
which ground would be used next?
Is Moorabbin's stands up to a crowd?
Frankston's supposed to be one of the better around
will we see a series of Geelong Home games,
What's Punt road oval like?
Is Waverley up to a full game ?

they'd suspend footy for a few weeks to accommodate it

No doubt it would be MCG and the Dome and the new Melbourne Rectangular Stadium opening next year but they'll also use:
ANZ Stadium (Teltra Stadium)
Suncorp
Skilled Park (GC)
Sydney Football Stadium
EngeryAustralia Stadium (will be 30-40k capacity by then)
There may be a new rectangular stadium in Perth by then for the Glory, Force and mooted return of the NRL Perth Reds as well.
Plenty of rectangular grounds to choose from without even the need to go to PP.

Oh, sorry.Mr Magic wrote:I think he means which grounds would we use for AFL games?bigcarl wrote:if they get the world cup they'll use the MCG and Telstra Dome
The World Cup would probably be played during the week to limit impact on the AFL, and I assume the AFL may even take a 2 week break like for the Comm Games a few years back/
IF we got it (and realisitically we hve a snowballs chance really) the AFl would have to stop for 5 weeks. No way would they consider having the games on while the World Cup is happening
Minimum `is 10 grounds of 40,000 capacity...stripped of all advertising to allow for FIFA sponsors
MCG
Telstra Dome
"Bubbledome" (expanded)
Suncorp
SFS
SCG
ANZ
Gabba (expanded)\
Subi(will be upgraded by then)
AAMI
Take those grounds out of action for minimum 6 weeks (FIFA say you cant play anything on a ground for 7 days prior to World Cup IIRC) and running the comp just couldnt happen

To your credit, it's not too much of a stretch of the imagination to come to the same conclusion as you did.bigcarl wrote:ah, i get it. a bit slow on the uptake todayMr Magic wrote:I think he means which grounds would we use for AFL games?bigcarl wrote:if they get the world cup they'll use the MCG and Telstra Dome

Think laterally....
1/ The AFL normally has a bye anyway...so that is one week gone anyway.
Possibly start the season early...and have two byes.
2/ Schedule games in this period that traditionally attract smaller crowds...so that the smaller grounds can be used. Blockbusters to be scheduled in the other periods.
For example schedule Interstate vs Vic clubs...and not Vic Clubs vs Vic Clubs.
*Geelong play their Kardinia Park Games then.
*The Hawks get their Launceston games then.
*The Dogs have their Darwin game

The Hun and Aged both have reports noting the AFL and NRL seasons would probably have to cease for up to 5 weeks while the Cup is going on.
Would we be wiolling to do that? Maybe start 5 weeks earlier and dump the NAB Cup that year (if its still going) I dount the 42 clubs will agree to that, the 19 in Sydney will not be pleased.

The AFL is nothing compared to FIFA. If they want to play the greatest event in the most supported code in the world, as much as I love AFL, its them who need to eff off.

I know you don't like it, you've made that quite clear. Its fortunate you aren't the only person who lives in this country, isn't it?
I'm betting you've never seen a match all the way through, funny how you can dismiss something out of hand based on fear and steryotypes.

now who is stereotyping........i watched soccer matches ...even played in some...before you were born......last ones i watched were during the sydney olympics......boring as watching a dog take a dump.....my dislike is not based on fear ffs.....i don't want to see my grandkids play soccer...instead of aussie rules......or any kids in the street for that matter......i haven't even thought about the ethnic s*** that has retarded the growth of the sport in this country.....not that that's necessarily a bad thing .....from my point of view.....and
..you don't have to get personal towards a poster who posts an opposing view ric old buddy......

Am I alone in thinking this could be a great way to get the AFL message to world. Difficult yes but an opportunity none the less.
Think say TD isn't used for the Soccer.... Friday and Sat games free to foreigners or someting like that to encourage them experience the game when there team isn't playing.

i love soccer, not quite as much as aussie rules but i love it all the same.
the game in australia is crap, absolute crap, and supporters of the a-league will watch soccer at its best and never attend an a-league game again if they are smart.
any proposition to stop the afl for over a month is absurred, and if it is the ffa and their stupid bid to host the world cup has any more than a 1-2 week effect on our game, then f*** them i will not attend a world cup game in protest of them ruining an afl season.
i would love a world cup to be hosted in australia, but not at the expense of a season of our game. football is our number 1 game, and if soccer is allowed to delay or freeze a season then it will be a massive victory for soccer's governing body. they will feel like they have the power to undermine the authority of the afl, and by doing a number on them will feel like they are superior to them.
so i am all for a world cup in australia, but not at the expense of a footy season.
