need for ....- 2008 needs - mark stevens

Post: # 516779Post saintbrat »

only saw this article this morning and was intersted to see the stats leaders.- (although some of the article appears to have been lifted straight from 2007 somewhere( ie barry brookes going- he's gone)

Kilda's need for speed
Mark Stevens | February 06, 2008 12:00am
SOMEWHERE in the 2007 season, St Kilda showed potential. They did after all win 11 games. But they should have done so much better. FINISHING POSITION
9th (11 wins, 10 losses, 1 draw)

THE LIST

UNTOUCHABLE
Nick Riewoldt
Lenny Hayes
Sam Fisher
Nick Dal Santo

TRADE POTENTIAL
James Gwilt
Raphael Clarke
Andrew McQualter

GOING, GOING?
Barry Brooks

GONE
Aaron Hamill
Andrew Thompson
Fraser Gehrig
Brett Voss
Matthew Clarke

WHAT THEY NEED
St Kilda has tall forward options - Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke - but it lacks a clever mid-sized target for variety. Someone capable of playing a Corey Jones or Robert Murphy-type role would be in valuable. The Saints also need more midfield speed and another line-breaker in the mould of Leigh Montagna. Like several rivals, another ruckman is a must.

SHEAHAN'S VERDICT
The Saints get a "fail" after their worst result since 2003. The indictment is a percentage of 96.55, a reflection of a negative style of play in the first half of the season and a general inability to kick big scores. They need a ruckman to allow Koschitzke to play forward.

THE GOOD
Scored 61 per cent of their goals from set shots, the most of any side. Also took the equal sixth-most marks inside 50 and won 81 free kicks in that zone - the second most of any side.

THE BAD
Ranked 13th in the AFL for inside 50 entries. The Saints were able to score from only 49.2 per cent of those entries - the second worst strike rate of any side.

2007 AT A GLANCE

WHAT WENT RIGHT
Sam Fisher became an elite defender. Lenny Hayes made an amazing recovery from a knee reco. Aaron Fiora silenced most of his doubters. Xavier Clarke finally strung some games together.

WHAT WENT WRONG
Aaron Hamill broke down again and others succumbed to injury. Sam Gilbert aside, not many kids pushed through.
