Is a footy mascot a real community benefit?
Jason Dowling
January 27, 2008

Social clubs raking in millions of dollars in gaming revenue are treating as a joke a scheme for channelling funds back into public programs.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Another inventive "community benefit" was the St Kilda football social club's $376 for "mascot expenses".

Well looking after St KIlda's mascot has a lot more community benefit than buying ciggy machines or automated sprit dispensers, as other Clubs do

The quote from the Clubs Victoria woman was laughable.."Well reinvesting in the Club is a community benefit because the community uses the Club". Huh?????????????

Hopefully this will shed new light on the "commujity benefits" of Hawthorn plonking a great big Pokies venue in the heart of the (very high) mortgage belt of Caroline Springs

Seriously is The Age one of our sponsors?

By the articles they print I would have to highly doubt it.

According to the clubs sponsors site they sponsor our leadership group.

Instead of backing us in some way they like to stick knives in our back.

Front page of The Ages website you see our mascot under a story about pokies and how we spend $300 dollars looking after the mascot. Thats probably just the dry cleaning on the suit. Instead they lump us in with clubs that are wasting money on drink dispensors. Well F-U the age we dont need your frekkin money, go spend the sponsorship on some botox work for your sports editor.

If you check out their real footy site the last article they wrote about the saints was.

Thomas, Saints in stalemate over payment dispute

Really a footy story. Westaway do us all a favour and dump their sorry arses to the curb.

$25 for a year's subscription?

It might be doing you a favour, but for the rest of us...

And FWIW, you can't seriously expect an unbiased (apparently) newspaper to give us a free kick all the time, can you? I reckon the mascot aspect is a pretty decent point to raise.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Everton,

Not expecting a free kick all the time. I would like 1 pro article every once in awhile.

You know a "we are flying" article puff piece, they are a Sponsor, after all its supposed to be a positive connotation.

Sure kick us if we have done something stupid.

And was that a crack? if so let me know what you really think?

Yep ... and the newspapers should always tell it as it is - good, bad or ugly.

How can you possibly whinge wanting Caro when you have Michaelangelo Rucci over there.  Perhaps the club could do a deal with the Addy for SA members, Westralian for WA members etc etc  !!

All we get is crow and port crap...it would be nice to read about other clubs(esp.saints) I just feel we (full paying interstate and country members) are discriminated against...before you jump all over me its my opinion. I have emailed a few times to the club but get no response but when i go to pay for 4 full social club memberships i hear from them pretty quickly ...oh well such is life i guess

The real reason why The Age provides the Vics with the great deal is that they are struggling to keep their position re advertsising ratings - so extra membership givaways to a couple of footy clubs helps build your readership.

'The West' is in the same group as The Age but they will never throw good dollars away for nothing because over there you only have the one local paper and they can charge what they like for Advertising ... plus 'The Australian' re-printed locally. The other papers don't arrive in time to early delivery.

The Advertiser doesn't have any real competition either.

Everything comes at a price - there is no free feed  ... but it's a damn good deal for Melbourne Sainters though.

The AGE also give very cheap subscriptions to every University student and VCE student in Victoria. I think they get The AGE Mon-Fri for about $25.00 pa. The only catch is that the paper is delivered to the school/uni !!
