The key question to ask yourself with every trade is ...

Post: # 474580Post Oh When the Saints »

With every trade you make, the key question to ask yourself is:

Does this trade improve the quality of my list?

It doesn't matter if you are trading for Chris Judd or Mark Bolton, whatever trade that occurs needs to be done with that question in mind.

That is why this trade period has been successful for the St Kilda Football Club. Despite any thoughts you may have about particular players, the four additions to our list have improved it's quality markedly:

Hamill (out) - C. Gardiner (in)
This change sees our former captain depart, but he has hardly played in 3 years and has offered us little on the field. In terms of performance in that time, Gardiner has consistently been in the best players in his VFL team and will improve the quality - and youth - of our list.

Sweeney (out) - A. Schneider (in)
This change sees us lose a young one-trick half-forward who has played good footy in the VFL for the past 2 years, for a proven, 98-game premiership player who has pace and skill.
Improves the quality of our list.

M. Clarke (out) - S. King (in)
This change sees us lose a 33-year old we picked up in the PSD, for a 28-year old former All-Australian ruckman, who has played good footy when fit over the past couple of years.
Improves the quality - and youth - of our list.

P. Raymond (out) - S. Dempster (in)
This change sees us lose a guy who never even looked like it, for a premiership tagger with 50-odd games under his belt. Dempster adds a hardness and shut-down ability that will compliment our midfield and defence nicely.
Improves the quality of our list.

All these trades improve our list significantly. Whilst we still lose Gehrig, who will not be replaced easily, we will have a significantly better list in 2008 than the one Lyon inherited at the end of 2006.

That is good trading.

And that's high-fives all round for Ross Lyon. Terrific work by Lyon, Elshaug and Ken Sheldon this week.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

In general I agre OWTS, but in your analysis you have missed out the fact that we have also dropped a pick - pick 26, which one might conservatively expect to get a 50-game player for.

Completely Agree.

In the odd chance that both Gardiner & King are fit and firing for 08, it will free up kossi for a more 'permanent' move up forward.

Regardless, it frees up kossi and doesn't force him to be the #1 ruck man which will add a new dimension to our game.

Yep, should have mentioned that.

At a conservative estimate with pick #26 you might nominate someone like a Troy Schwarze type in terms of benefit to your team. So that is what we have lost.

All good and well, however...

If Charlie Gardiner replacing Aaron Hamill is seen as improving the quality of our list, then quite frankly, pretty much any VFL/AFL standard player would be seen as an improvement.

Ditto Sweeney, Clarke and Raymond.

Yes, we've improved our list by replacing those players, but lets not start hailing our work today as a masterclass in recruiting until we see how much of a difference they actually make. As always, time will tell.

Enjoy your evening, Saintsational.
