who remembers Mark and Jeff Sarau?
also from the local paper today, can't find a link but basically ......... Mark Sarau (brother of Jeff) will move to Barnawartha next month. He will take up the coaching position at Rutherglen in 2008 (the same team Nicky W played for in 2006). Story says he did the running and match-ups for the Saints in 2004 and 2005, also played with GT in the 70's.

Remember them well.
Mark was a good ordinary player, as Jack Dyer would say.
Jeff was a fantastic player who carried or rucks from the mid seventies through to the eighties.
Tireless worker who gave 100% all the time.

Yes Pup was No 31.
Was a great ruckman for us.......took heaps of marks and was very good around the ground racking up the disposals.
Was relatively short from memory..only 6 ft 3...??

Pup was Saraus' nickname......though if you want it too...go for itst.byron wrote:Nice of you to call me Pup. I'll take it as a compliment. He was only about 6'3 but I remember him jumping into other ruckmen. Was a real blood and guts contributor. Had a big Ivan Milat style moustache I think.

jeff sarau was a terrific old-style ruckman in the days before the afl changed the centre bounce rules and effectively outlawed that style of ruckman, taking the body work out of it.
as others have said he was only about 6' 3" tall, but he was about 6' 3" across the shoulders as well.
pup used to use his ample frame beautifully at the bounces, muscling his opponent out and used to dominate around the ground with lots of strong marks.
fond memories of a very good player.

Can't remember it myself but my parents have told that after one game in the social club that "pup" nursed me on his knee - you know the horsey manuovre - would have been 73 or 74 - like I said cant remember although my parents must have been impressed - impressed enough to remember it and let me know.
As bad as the late 70's and most of the 80's were for those that were there - no matter how bad we were - Moorabbin was still a f@rkin awesome place to be.

I think either Big Carl or Cowboy gave him the nckname when he first arrived at St.Kilda. Thought he was just a young kid running around like a puppy!! Or something like that.st.byron wrote:I'd forgotten that. Wonder where he got that moniker from. Thanks for the offer but I'm a bit too old to be Pup
I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.
