Port, Swans talking
11Sep07
VFL club Port Melbourne has expressed interest in resuming an alignment with the Sydney Swans.
Port president Peter Saultry confirmed last Friday that he had sounded out the Swans about a part-alliance.
The clubs were together from 2000-2002, but Sydney scrapped the link for financial reasons.
Now it is looking to the VFL as a way of providing stronger competition for its reserves players.
Sydney is unbeaten in the AFL Canberra Premier Division, boasting a percentage of 370.60 after Round 21.
Saultry said Port Melbourne had done well as a stand-alone club this season but was open-minded about alignments and another relationship with Sydney was worth exploring.
''At this stage they say they don't know what they're doing, but I've said I'm prepared to fly up to Sydney to talk to them,'' Saultry said.
''If we're talking about them having six players play in the VFL every week . . . if you put them with what we've got and what we'll be hopefully signing for next year, we would be pretty good.
''It's going to be a long process for Port Melbourne. We've shown this year that you can be competitive, but we've got to be more competitive and more consistent.''
Sydney football manager Andrew Ireland could not be reached for comment.
