A softer Telstra Dome Surface..at last!!!
According to SEN it has been announced by Collo that the Dome has spent $2.4million on buying 18 batteries of special mobile lights to be used to help grow the grass better on the Dome's surface.
The Lights are from Holland and have been used in Europe to grow grss on soccer fields.
so hopefelly in 2008 we will have less players. fatigued....and hopefullya lower injury rate too.
Background: The reason why the domes' surface is not the concrete slab, but rather that the Dome' grass does nort grow well and effectively starts to die as soon as new square is installed.
This means that aftera while that there is nota healthy thatch of grass, which would be soft and springy, but rather just a thin thatch whick looks green but which in facts has players bootstuds impacting on the soil rather than gripping intoa healthy thatch of grass.

harder surfaces should lead to less fatigue than softer surfaces in the game itself
but, they are also linked to more damage and therefore longer recovery, which i guess is the fatigue you're talking about
a softer surface decreases the rate of loading in impact, which is seen as the major determinant for injury

Maybe West Coke will move to the Dome now?
No...but they are thinking about Mt Buller because there is a "snow making" machine up there.

The problem with Telstra Dome is that it's facing the wrong way.
The ground runs East-West... and with the roof running length ways means that only the centre of the ground receives maximum sunlight, but the wings are missed.
If the ground was to run North-South... then as the sun passes over, the whole ground receives full sunlight.
It's just one of many c**k-ups the stadium has...

Absolutely correct HSV..the dropkick orginal ground managers assumed everything would happen under a closed roofHSVKing wrote:The problem with Telstra Dome is that it's facing the wrong way.

They also had the option of using translucent material in the roof / overhang structure, but apparently was rejected on the grounds that it was acoustically inferior and a big % of the grounds income was going to come from holding concerts there
Got a good laugh from the A League season launch brochure in last Sundays Age. Banged on about TD being a reconfigurable surface from oval to rectangular. Has happened once only, cost the Storm 60,000 to do and damaged the surface so badly that its never been repeated. As far as I'm aware the relevant rollers and slides are now rusted tight and TD will be oval forever!

Was originally stated that it would need to be rolled out ATLEAST twice a month so that it didn't rust/jam.
It could have been done... but i guess they just don't charge enough for admittance/food/parking/breathing there to pay for it all

Does Telstra Dome have a decent drainage system?
IMO they should leave the roof open while it's raining, give the grass a bit of water...

Meant to be a state of the art drainage system...battye wrote:Does Telstra Dome have a decent drainage system?

It rained during the A League grand final... and the ground didn't seem to be slippery for the players or anything.

well Collo is a bit slow up top methinks.....
They have preferred to spend over $1M per year on grass replacement for 7 years now and finally have decided a $2.3M investment in lights is a good option.
Electricity and maintanence/replacement of some bulbs would be an ongoing expense, but as a regular poster would say "you do the maths....."
