IF pick #8 do we trade or draft? For who?
Trade: I've seen a few scenarios for Dan Houston. At 27, I wasnt too keen. But he is elite and very versatile, mid/forward/defender. If we get #8 thats what itd take to secure him. But we could try to trade our 2 picks for #1 ( tell him hes dreamin)
Draft:
1st round Picks (if we get compo)
Sid Draper & Jagger Smith. If we got these two I'd shave my head.

Very unlikely to get pick 8, end of round one probably best case but in what dips supposed to be a deep draft don’t trade early picks our first should be best available mid and second best available player maybe a versatile tall

Port Adelaide set up their midfield through some clever manoeuvring in 2018. That’s the year they traded out Polec, Wingard, and Pittard and they moved up in the draft as well as retaining their original first round pick. They landed Rozee, Butters and Duursma.SAINT-LEE wrote: ↑Wed 04 Sep 2024 8:17pm Trade: I've seen a few scenarios for Dan Houston. At 27, I wasnt too keen. They had some luck with Horne-Francis, but I suspect that was mostly due to that player never wanting to play for the Kangaroos in the first place. Is Jason Cripps still working with them?

Keep it simple. Draft the two best available mids with 7 and 8

Re: IF pick #8 do we trade or draft? For who?
Take it to the draft and grab the best kid available.
Dan Houston is an excellent footballer and a suitable age, but he plays the one position we are well stocked in with Sinclair and NWM.
This year has shown that freeing up Sinclair to play in the midfield is bad idea.
He is an A grade HBF and only a B grade midfielder and with NWM gives us to of the best users of the ball coming out of the backline in the game.
The only way Houston makes sense is if they plan to make him a midfielder as that is our primary weakness.
However, if we want a midfielder target a midfielder don't try to convert a HBF.
If they can use the pick to get a Bailey Smith or similar midfielder or even a key defender then sure that makes sense.

I think very unlikely is a stretch.
It seems to be a genuine 50-50.

Under no circumstances should we trade our first round draft picks unless its for a young gun pure midfielder.

Keep it simple, do not trade 1st or 2nd round picks for the next 2 to 3 seasons.
Be patient and build via the various drafts.
Don't overpay anyone, if the want to leave, let theme leave.
And let Ross keep building a culture that doesn't overpay.
We all know about the "cost of living", well the "cost of recruiting" has also gotten stupid and favours FAs going directly to the rich and successful clubs.

The problem is the "cost of recruiting" in actual fact favours clubs willing to be inventive with their player payments.Vortex wrote: ↑Thu 05 Sep 2024 10:47am Keep it simple, do not trade 1st or 2nd round picks for the next 2 to 3 seasons.

I take it with a very large pinch of salt when you hear that players are going or staying for less money.
It rarely if ever happens, invariably the reality turns out to be other incentives offered to players and their families that somehow don't get included in the salary cap.
The famed "Costa living allowance" that many Geelong players took advantage of has been well discussed as has Judd and his 2 hours a year at Visy.
These deals are far more common than is being reported and I wouldn't mind betting that there is an added incentive for Battle to take less to go to Hawthorn.
The problem for the less influential clubs like ours and North if we tried these deals we would become the scapegoat for the AFL to show that they are serious about questionable salary cap deals.

Re: IF pick #8 do we trade or draft? For who?
SEN reporting feeling is moving more towards pick 8 .
With Tassie coming in soon on the draft we need to stockpile as much top end talent as possible.
All reports are this draft is no stand out and first 12-15 good.
Get 2 picks in top 10 - end up perhaps being 9,10 with Ashcroft in there and potential others.
IF decide to let Membrey go perhaps him and a 3rd for a 2nd and add 3 players inside 35

Let's draft 2 footballers similar to Clark and Coffield and play them at half back!

If he is uncontracted (like he is now) he can walk to anyone for no cost. We would get nothing but a free list spot if he leaves.

Re: IF pick #8 do we trade or draft? For who?
To bring it back to the original question, who would we draft with picks 7&8.
https://www.afl.com.au/news/1195410/cal ... anking/amp
Looking through this phantom guide, I think we would be stoked with any of the mids from the top 10 here. I would be happy with whatever is left over.
Ashcroft is likely the only one from this list to be bid on in the top 10, forcing out picks back to 8&9.
1. Levi Ashcroft (bris f/s)
2. Jagga Smith - mid
3. Harvey Langford - mid
4. Finn O’Sullivan - mid
5. Josh Smillie - mid
6. Murphy Reid - mid/for
7. Sid Draper - mid
8. Harry Armstrong (key forward - don’t want)
9. Sam Lalor - mid
10. Luke Trainor (key defender - don’t want)
I really want someone to snap up Armstrong or Trainor before we get a pick so we can grab 2 of these great mids.

Harry Armstrong with our 2nd pick would be good, if we didn't have such a dire midfield.

Re: IF pick #8 do we trade or draft? For who?
There are only very few players I'd trade pick 8 for, and there's no way those clubs would let them go.
The only trade I see us doing is either turning 7 & 8 into a top 3 pick, or splitting one into 14 & 15.

Whatever the brains trust does, it’s got to use those picks to develop a team that will beat the hawks in 2-3 years time. What we just saw from the Kennets tonight is the minimum standard to aim for, only they can also add 2 top-class defenders for next year, one of whom was ours. It will be a tough ask.

Unfortunately St Kilda has never had a brains trust. If they did, they'd have more than one premiership. Like everyone else, I'm sick of the excuses.
