GT on Twitter

Post: # 2075227Post WellardSaint »

Was asked about whether this will be Membrey's last game.
Said 'should be'

Then began a big thread.
He said we'd be better trading Skunk for picks.

Said he'd 💯 trade King for 2 1st round picks.

Also said Sinclair and Steele should be shopped around 🤷‍♂️ while they have trade value.

Someone said 'no way, Sincs is a jet who sets an example'
To which GT replied 'sets an example 🤔😳😱 don't think so'
also 'he can be selective' and 'not sure where he is when we get pummelled'

He reckons we need to get lots of picks in 2 yrs before Tassie gets in.
Also that there's a huge age gap between Sincs and the youngsters (Owens, Pou, NAS, etc) and when the youngies are in their peak, Sincs will be too old.
GT wants to get good teens in, to develop with the young guys we have.

GT, whether you love him or hate him, is all about hard-nosed business decisions. He said it's 'premiership-based, not short-term fan performance thing'

V interesting thread...

Sounds like a man looking for attention. Is he mates with Chris Pelchen?

I like GT

But he was going to trade Milney if he wasn’t dumped

Milney went on to be an all time great and dual AA

King for 2 (early) first round picks OR a first and a young gun mid has to be looked at.

I see where he’s coming from, but I don’t think he’s read the omens.

Sure, the Tassie team will be a threat.

But if we keep finishing down the ladder, we might end up being the Tassie team ourselves.

From 2001-2003 there was defiitely a "hold ... hold" vibe around StK. I think GT has admitted as much.

Roo and Kosi weren't enough ... we had to get Ball, Clarke, Dal, Goddard, Montagna, etc

Positive results came quickly after that.

Right now we definitely need to add to the likes of NWM, Wilson, Phillipou, Garcia, Shoenmaker, Drafting agrressively isn't the worst idea.

He doesn't make sense. Theres no guarantee that the players drafted in will be better. Stick with what you know and don't sell your good players. We don't have that many!

GT has always been clickbait since he left the Saints.

For years the media rang dial a quote GT to comment on the Saints.

Over the years due to his comments, he has lost the trust and faith of players who played under him who loved him at that time and post his departure. (Direct comment from a player coached by GT).

GT makes comments to be controversial IMO, not that he genuinely believes them.

How do you build a club culture when you trade out senior players at the end of their careers?
How did trading Mitchell, Hodge, Lewis etc... work out for Hawthorn?

I don't rate GT at all, correctly or incorrectly, I believe a professional coach in 2004 & 2005 would have built a legacy.
The 2004 list was the best that has ever been assembled at the Saints and were beautifully balanced with established senior AA stars, champion veterans, young AA guns and future young champions on the rise.

There was a place for GT at the club, but it wasn't as a tactical coach or heading up training services.
The whole mana manager story is also over hyped IMO.

So too is the myth GT got us to two prelims with a bunch of 19/20 YO as our core

The situation certainly wasn't helped by an administration that was out of control and a president doing drugs in front of key corporate sponsors and carrying on like a party boy.

Opportunity lost!

Gun veterans (+30)
Peckett
Thompson
Harvey (AA 2003)

AA & stars at their peak (23 - 29)
Hamill
Jones (AA 2004)
Hayes (AA 2003, 2005)
Milne
Gehrig (AA 2004)

Young stars on the rise (some already or future AA)
Reiwoldt (AA 2004)
Ball (AA 2005)
Dal Santo (AA 2005)
Kossie
Clarke (X)
Maguire

Young players yet to fully break
Goddard
Montagna
Gram
Fisher (Sam)
Clarke (R)

Hard nuts
Baker
Powell
Guerra

Solid players
Penny
Voss
Schwarze
Callaghan
Black
Blake

The only thing we lacked was a genuine gun ruckman

Wtf are you on about? He did build a legacy.

He took a bottom 4 team up the ladder and he gave opportunities to young future leaders with his rotating captaincy policy.

The new bloke in 2007 was the beneficiary of that legacy and that group of future leaders who had already played off in 2 consecutive prelim finals

GT was sacked in October 2006 because the president of the football club wanted to take him to court 6 months later

I agree, the draft is a raffle, clubs never know if a young player that was one of the best at U/18 level will cut it at AFL level.
Plenty of examples over time of players that didn't make it but good judges thought they would.

Aussie Jones wasn't at his peak in 05. He was on his last legs...and most of the time he was legless

He was 30-50% less effective in the last year of his career.

Stephen Milne wasn't at his peak either.

You're making stuff up to suit your bs bias

In 2006 most footy journalists said the teams most likely to be Grand Finalists over the next few years were going to be St Kilda and Geelong.

We sacked our coach and set the team back 18 months... while Geelong restructured their football department and retained their head coach

You seriously believe GT could have done what Lyon did in 09?
Wow.

Imagine Lyon with Gehrig AND Roo both at their peak? And a coach who knew how to defend. I have no doubt that we would have won 04 and 05 flags.

In 09 before Kosi got injured and we had a genuine 2 prong attack with Milne at the feet with Schneider, we were literally unstoppable. Kosi getting injured put a dent and made us unbeatable to very strong. I know he played finals, but he was never the same player in the back half of the year kosi. GT lost the unloseable prelim to a team that had fallen over the cats ion a semi.

"GT lost the unlosable" hahaha 🤣😂

Edit. The other ironic line you use is "fell over the line". Isn't that what happened with our win over Bulldogs in the prelim in 09?

Lyon had one of the best AFL teams in 20 years. The other teams that had such strong years were Geelong in 2008, Brisbane in 2002 and Essendon in 2000. Essendon and Brisbane won flags and Geelong ended up with 2 premierships either side of 2008.

Lyon had a Ferrari that was 2 laps in front with 6 games to go in home and away in 2009 (Round 16 - 16 wins- no mid season bye and no bye before finals) ...and he thrashed the engine a few times to make sure he'd win the McLellan trophy

As I said...Butters sacked a coach prematurely and he took on a rookie. It set us back and we let other clubs catch up to us. Lyon wasn't the reason for our team making Finals. He ended up being a good coach...but not good enough

At the end of 2006 Geelong got gifted Hawkins that was the difference.

With statements like that it goes to show how in touch GT is with club. Its basically an irrelevent old man attempting to create some click bait and relevancy. A massive fail GT, crawl back into your hole mate.

Read this article. It describes a defensively and tactically brilliant coach and despite the perception by some on here, we weren’t regarded as a Rolls Royce team at all. In fact we weren’t rated at the start of 09 by hardly any scribes as mentioned in the article. This myth that Lyon was ‘gifted’ a super team is simply wrong. Our memories are what our biases want us to believe, but thankfully the internet is there to remind us of the facts

Back to what this thread started out on - the content of GT's post - and loosely on what this thread's gone on to be about...

IMHO GT was very good at developing promising players into leaders and clubmen. I would guess his comments are based on his ability to do that. Unfortunately, our record on player development since he got the heave-ho absolutely stinks. We have some wonderfully promising players ATM. But I wouldn't bet the farm on their continued improvement.

St Kilda tripped up by sacking GT in 2006.

Instead of us maintaining our edge over the young Geelong...the internet tells me Ross Lyon failed to get the best from a team full of stars ready to contend.

The following was from The Age in 2009. "In late 2006, a senior coach from another club said coaching the St Kilda list was akin to being offered sex with Elle Macpherson."

The line about Elle is down towards the end of the section titled Brighton Cowboys

Yep. GT definitely served his purpose at the Saints and I’m by no means a hater. The young players who reached their potential under him was a credit to him. But we needed him to step aside at the end of 04. In fact we need him to step aside at the start of 04 in hindsight. That sounds like a criticism but it’s not. We needed an experienced tactically sound coach to take us to the next level.

His idiotic comments about removing all our best players is a reminder as to how much of a loose cannon he could be
