Re: Sons of Guns
Depends on if you mean on the list or playing, but it's perhaps not as uncommon as you might think.
Geelong 2022
Melbourne 2021
Richmond 2020
Richmond 2019
West Coast 2018
Richmond 2017
All did not have any father sons playing in their Grand Final win.
Collingwood 2023 the obvious big exception with 3 F/S playing
I got bored of looking back any further

Re: Sons of Guns
Good one! I didn't go far enough back up the draft list for Hawkins, Bews, Viney, they all started a long while back. Don't think Rivers is a F/S though?King Max wrote: ↑Tue 23 Jan 2024 5:04pmGeelong had Hawkins and Bews in 2022shrodes wrote: ↑Tue 23 Jan 2024 2:41pmDepends on if you mean on the list or playing, but it's perhaps not as uncommon as you might think.

So I guess it's roughly 50/50 if you have a F/S or not. I don't think there is really a strong correlation there though

Re: Sons of Guns
I was going on names and looked up Hawkins and Viney to be sure. I knew who their fathers were but maybe they got there a different way.
I always assumed Jared and Trent were father son but there’s only 17 years between them.

Re: Sons of Guns
Frankie was there on Monday watching his son train.
The Peckett family were at training again today but Peckett junior was just a spectator.
The list changes for 2025 have begun, always an interesting time for an avid supporter.

Re: Sons of Guns
They look the same height .
Does that mean peckitt is allot taller than his dad or is spider junior expecting a growth spurt ?

Re: Sons of Guns
Hope I am 100% wrong, but I don't see either of them making it.
Big hopes on the Reiwoldt & Hayes boys
Barry Hall has 3 boys but played what 90 games with us?
Hope Josh Bruce's son isn't a gun with his 99 matches.
I wanted us to list Dylan Roberton as sub while he was still on our list to get him to 100 as he has boys and his wife comes from good local footy stock.
When have we ever had a decent FS?

We have had better luck with Grandfather/Grandsons. Unfortunately no discount on getting such players.

Re: Sons of Guns
Whilst still a win, I agree it is not as valuable now, but back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s it was a pot of gold if you had a good one.shrodes wrote: ↑Wed 24 Jan 2024 1:01pmGood one! If I recall correctly you got the FS selection for a 3rd round pick. Geelong got two champions in Hawkins who was rated #1 in his draft and Albert Jnr who was the best player of the era for picks in the 40’s.
That’s a kiss on the #### in anyone’s language.

Re: Sons of Guns
I look at the pies F/sons with envy. Two Daicos brothers (1st and 2nd in B&F) and the AA CHB and captain of their club.
Their opponents on GF day have two (potential) midfield guns.
Bulldogs had Libba in their flag. Tom Mitchell was at Swans. Cats had Scarlett Hawkins Ablett. Over time it feels like every club has produced a ripper F/S. Except us

Re: Sons of Guns
An antiquated romantic rule out of step with the level playing field principles the AFL pays lip service to. A large element of luck given 50% of children are female and the small number of males that are good enough to play AFL. Needs to be removed. If Collingwood and other influencial clubs had not been beneficiaries it would be long gone. No longer justifiable and possibly a restraint of trade.Moods wrote: ↑Fri 26 Jan 2024 7:56am I look at the pies F/sons with envy. Re: Sons of Guns
We can’t produce father sons is mother nature’s/natural selections way of telling us something.
One flag in 150 years!

Re: Sons of Guns
Father/son should be changed but only for clubs that already benefited
Not picking guns for a bunch of 3rd/4th round picks
The rule change can be implemented for other clubs once they eventually pick up a gun for peanuts
Is this a biased opinion ??
Definitely !!
Fxxx I hate Geelong
Hawkins AND Selwood
Ablett AND Bartel
Take out Selwood and Bartel = NO flags
They'd be just another club with a longer premiership drought than us !!
