Late pick Key Defenders

Post: # 1989633Post cwrcyn »

The common view is that good key defenders are selected early in the draft because these are the ones with the best skill set and those with deficiencies in their game are left until after the second round.

This hasn't stopped some very fine key defenders being picked up later in the draft. The same question marks around these players would have crossed the minds of recruiters at the time, otherwise they would have been taken earlier

Here are a few that were selected later, and the pick they were taken at.

Scott Thompson 37
Cale Hooker 54
Jordan Roughead 31
Ben Stratton 46
Tom McDonald 53
Sam Frost (Rookie)
Tom Barrass 43
James Sicily 56
Jeremy McGovern (Rookie)
Dougal Howard 56
Josh battle 39
Brennan Cox 41
Tom McCartin 33
Harrison Petty 37

With the right development, who's to say van Es can't be among tis group?

With that combination of his speed and strength it's a good base to start from.

Excellent post cwrcyn. I think in a few years will be very happy with Van Es. I hope he's a sponge for Enright's knowledge and is given an opportunity at some stage later this season, with Howard & Wilkie playing in the same game.

I wonder if the club still has high hopes for Oscar Adams, could be a critical year for Oscar and his place on the list, unless he is contracted for 2024.

The list changes for 2025 have begun, always an interesting time for an avid supporter.

Though he was drafted as a forward.

Later switched to the backline after joining us.
