Coach Speak
Goodwin
" ..it was not a shock.." ".. there's obviously work to be done".... " we knew....." everyone at the club is hurting as much as the supporters"
note implication supporters and club are separate".
Could have been Ratts talking, although he uses disappointed and disappointing more.
Begs obvious questions, but you know, we pay our money: could they not say something like "Gawn was cooked early, Fitsch was pantz, Lever was a passenger, Petracca had a broken leg, Berry was fantastic, I was out coached, can see why North delisted Brown.
Seems coaches go to same bland media coach and we need an interpreter to translate their banal cliches into incisive comments on the actual game - do they think we can't see what happened and just shrug when told - well we knew that might happen....so? what plans did you make, changes?
Apologies for being grumpy, but they seem to take press conferences as a necessary evil tick the box exercise where you say nothing useful/smart - except for McCrae, he is quite good, I think. Hope he doesn't get worn down by conformity apparatchiks.

Re: Coach Speak
don't be grumpy, be happy. melbourne the most overrated and arrogant premiers we've seen in many years were shown to be pretenders. hubris is a mental weakness, and melbourne are full of it.

How can a team be overrated premiers?desertsaint wrote: ↑Sat 10 Sep 2022 10:49am don't be grumpy, be happy. melbourne the most overrated and arrogant premiers we've seen in many years were shown to be pretenders. hubris is a mental weakness, and melbourne are full of it.

Re: Coach Speak
They were fantastic last year. Gawn, Petracca, Oliver were exceptional. Their engine room was elite, great defence, best second marking forward in the comp. Was a well deserved flag.desertsaint wrote: ↑Sat 10 Sep 2022 10:49am don't be grumpy, be happy. melbourne the most overrated and arrogant premiers we've seen in many years were shown to be pretenders. hubris is a mental weakness, and melbourne are full of it.
Agree re the OP.
What Yorkeys said was actually what happened.

Re: Coach Speak
Melbourne made a huge mistake not playing McDonald last night. With Brown & Jackson seriously out of form & Fritch covered they had no one to take a mark forward. You only had to see what a difference Petty made in the last 5 minutes they moved him forward. When his players werent completely dominant Goodwin looked an average coach. It was a familiar scenario, in that they kept going back to the same 4 mids even though Brisbane were dominating them in the 2nd half.

Re: Coach Speak
With all premiers, it is your bottom 6 that count
Last year Melbourne had a fantastic bottom 6 (Bowey, Rivers, Jordan etc)
This year there bottom 6 is nowhere near that standard and it shows
Brown is so past it, it’s not funny
Would seriously not get a game anywhere else.
Jackson overrated, Pickett undisciplined (I think 3 50m penalties last night)
And the bottom line is that since R10, they are 6 and 8 (hardly premiership form)

Re: Coach Speak
overrated as a great premier that was basically a fait accompli to go again, and again. they drank their own bathwater and it showed. the comp caught up and worked them out, as most often happens, but more damaging was the self belief that they would win anyway - they fall away in games becuase they don't put in as hard as a team that knows it needs to give its best and then more. that's what makes a great team. remember melbourne were blessed with an injury free year last year, and also won a very different premiership - away from the victorian cauldron and the pressure that brings. it came this year and they wilted in the face of it - couldn't go up another level in finals. no doubt excuses will include the fact they had injuries (like every other team) rather than the fact they weren't good enough. their messaging is always that they lost a game, not that a better team beat them.Beno88 wrote: ↑Sat 10 Sep 2022 11:35amHow can a team be overrated premiers?desertsaint wrote: ↑Sat 10 Sep 2022 10:49am don't be grumpy, be happy. melbourne the most overrated and arrogant premiers we've seen in many years were shown to be pretenders. hubris is a mental weakness, and melbourne are full of it.

Re: Coach Speak
Very dependent on Gawn, Petracca, Oliver, and Langdon. If two of those perform under par, they are in trouble.
They're still very good, though
The key to beating them is to play fast so that Gwan and Jackson can't drop into your forward half, shut down Oliver and kick chaos balls into the forward line

Re: Coach Speak
Yeah many don't rate their flag, it was a significantly effected comp due to COVID BS, the Dogs preparation was severely compromised, even Melbourne players are on record as saying it didn't feel like a proper flag.Beno88 wrote: ↑Sat 10 Sep 2022 11:35amHow can a team be overrated premiers?desertsaint wrote: ↑Sat 10 Sep 2022 10:49am don't be grumpy, be happy. melbourne the most overrated and arrogant premiers we've seen in many years were shown to be pretenders. hubris is a mental weakness, and melbourne are full of it.

So there's that.
And there there's also still thier reputation as being bruise free kick chasing down hill skiers. The had injuries that didn't help but both finals losses were on the back of the opposition beating them by bringing physical pressure. On the bug stage they wilted.
Heaps of talent but missing finals grunt and aggression.

Re: Coach Speak
I feel Melbourne would have won 9 out 10 rematches with Brissy with those teams.
They are not overrated as a team that much. They are good.
Bad coaching move by Goodwin, untagging Neale.
Bad decision by Lever to use his right hand to paddle instead of his left.
Easy misses.
Glad Brisbane won but it is a weaker series now.
(That said I am 1-5 in my finals tips)
