Assuming Kent (99 games, age 28 1/2) and Hannebery (225, 31 1/2) gone
Ryder stays

Apart from WB and Melb all other premiers in 2010-2021 period had over 100 game average ranging from 101 - 167.

Therefore the demograpic of the list says the best is yet to come and will get younger once above have left with 28 players in the 1-100 games bracket.

The position therefore is that the next 2 years in the areas of recruitment/ drafting, trading and most importantly internal development will be critical to determining if the next 5-8 years are a period of finals and pushing for the imaginary 2nd premiership or mediocrity resulting ultimately in a fall back down the ladder to rebuild number (sorry lost count).

An informative contribution - and correct

Wilkie was among other mature aged State League players bought in because of the age/experience demographic of our List

In support of the analysis I would add that many making their opinions known on this forum have no idea of what it takes to build (yes, build in these times of compromised Drafting and other player movement regulations) a side which can successively play finals football because by successively playing finals football you best position to win a premiership

Apart from Ryder and Hannebery, our next most experienced is the liability Ross

Then we are down to Billings and Sinclair, both about 130 games

We have a core of younger players whose futures look bright, starting with King, Windhager, Owens, Sharman
and Wanganeen-Milera

We just do not have a class core of half a dozen players between Ryder and Hannebery and Sinclair and Billings

Plus some structural issues with height in key positions both forward and back (so support for King and Howard)

For all the demented carry on on this forum by some, we are realistically 2 years off given the logistics of our List and the need for a couple of players

That is football and football Clubs

They are always a work in progress

And only one side wins the premiership each year

Forget the age demographic.


It is quality that matters. Look at the Cats this year.

We simply do not have enough top end players of any age.

Geelong has 16 players aged 29 or older. Nearly all their key players are in that age bracket. They have more players over 30 than any other team.

Each week they put out a team that has the most games experience by a country mile.

A list demographic should be ideally look like a bell curve. Theirs looks like the left hand side of a triangle

It is quality that matters. Look at the Cats this year.

We simply do not have enough top end players of any age.

Geelong have no choice as they invested so much into their influential players Dangerfield, Hawkins, etc and the time is ticking for all they have to go all in now.

Very different to us who must build without the benefit of father sons or dodgy real estate deals which become available once you retire such as down Barwon way
