Current Forward Set Ups across the AFL

Post: # 1961407Post Devilhead »

Current standard preferred tall to medium forward marking set ups across the league (doesn't include resting Ruckman) - when players are available

Melbourne - Brown, McDonald, Fritsch (3)
Brisbane - Daniher, McStay, Hipwood (3)
Freo - Lobb, Taberner, Logue (3)
Geelong - Hawkins, Cameron, Rohan (3)
Carlton - McKay, Curnow, Silvagni (3)
Richmond - Lynch, Riewoldt, Balta (3)
Sydney - Franklin, McDonald, Heeney (3)
St Kilda - King, Membrey (2)
Collingwood - Mihocek, Cameron, Henry (3)
Bulldogs -  Naughton, then 2 of JU-H, Scache, Bruce (3)
Port - Dixon, Marshall, Georgiadis (3)
Gold Coast - Casboult, Chol (King) maybe (2 or 3)
GWS - Hogan, Himmelberg, Riccardi (3)
Hawthorn - Lewis, Koschitske, Gunston (3)
Adelaide - Walker, Thilthorpe, Fogarty, (3)
Essendon - Wright, Jones, Stringer (3)
North - Larkey, Zurhaar (2)
West Coast - Kennedy, Darling, Waterman (3)

Reckon that is pretty close - also doesn't include marking smalls like Greene, Weightman, Elliott, etc ....

Think it's time our Match Committee wake the f-up an get with the programme

Just like Isaac Heeney from the Swans, our boy Snags plays like a tall...or at least he thinks he does

Didn't you know Higgins nickname was Buckets?

I think Sharman is in favor however Sharman is only good at VFL level but he is very VFL level at AFL level.

He is in favor because he has played 3 games this year?

Point of the thread is to show nearly every team's preferred forward structure set up is to play 3 marking tall to medium height players permanently forward ...... our preference is not to do that

I think we are in agreement, Sharman is not the answer, his 3 games this season confirm that I suppose, but yet there are posters still insisting be belongs on an AFL field.

Hopefully the recruiters have a tall forward on their shopping list after a ruckman and more midfileders.

Devilhead, I think you can add Reid to Sydney's F50. Gold Coast will also include Day / Lukoscious (if fit).

Minimum of 3 marking & leading options is the option in the age of 6-6-6. Run on goals is what every team is after, more likely when marking targets can be isolated one on one.

So you have written 21yo Sharman off after 7 games (starting in the 22) and kicking 13 goals in those games?

Seriously??

He's the one struggling to get a game in a side that is clearly screaming out for an additional tall forward, doesn't that suggests he's a long way off the pace?

No currently it's means the Match Committee don't know what they are doing and are preservering with model that even Blind Freddy can see isn't working

Am I understanding the point you're trying to make?
You want to get rid of our resting ruck in the forward line and replace him with a permanent tall forward?

We desperately need an extra tall forward who is AFL standard. However can you select a player based on a role or structural need alone even though the player might not be AFL grade or do you pick a side with as many AFL standard players as your list allows?...Our list is incredibly short of depth.

Does Rowan Marshall start in the forward line at the start of every match?

In other words, when Ryder is contesting the centre square bounce is RoMa at Full Forwad or Centra HF?

If that is the structure thn alright...all the people againt Sharman coming in to the side...you win!

If the 'resting ruckman' lines up on the pine at the start of games and if he's on the pine for more than half of any given quarter, then we definitely don't have a structure that includes 3 permanent talls.

If Ratts could, I recon he'd drop RoMa this week.

And leave a 34 year old to ruck for the whole match. Great idea

I don't understand why you're saying that RoMa should be dropped.

Is it because he needs to be managed or is it because you think he's not contributing or is it because you want another small forward to come in? Kent maybe

They talk about Sydney being too Buddy conscious l think we are too King conscious. Membrey runs his arse off as do others but we bomb it to King who has 4 apponents reindeer me off “kick it to Roo “

Great thread and post
Writing off Sharman cause Ratten won’t select him cause he likes his bad ass “Dan the enforcer Butler” is just dumb
We go to King 38% of the time - more than Dogs go to Naughton????? Think about that next up is Higgins
It tells you Membrey/Higgins are not the no 2 answer and resting ruckman strategy sure as hell ain’t working
We need to think about life after Membrey - he’s been non influential and gets sent down back to stop bleeding cause in forward 50 he can’t get a kick
We are not winning a flag with this team/set up we need to acknowledge that and move on
Sharman must be given a decent run at it to prove himself before seasons end
Whoever (Lade) is in charge of our transition/forward 50 set up needs to be given the arse.

Thought below BF post summed it

I can’t see reasoning behind not playing Sharman, playing Membrey as a floating back, bombing on Higgins’ head as the second tall (lol), Butler running around like a headless chook avoiding contact and playing backyard trick shots.
Beggars belief that we think hack bombs to King in a 3 on 1 is the best plan. Definition on insanity and all that.

Like slamming your c**k in a car door this club.

Isn’t Marshall/Ryder resting forward

Making us extremely tall up front - too tall

Most teams
Two talls
Hybrid
3 smalls

Conventional set up

This poor kid is the most contentious youngster I can think of for ages

If a young, 10g forward was getting these types of results anywhere else... supporter basis would be saying gee what a promising young player, could be anything, let’s give him a shot

Here we’re like... he hasn’t kicked 15 goals in a game up yet. As a goal kicker he needs to get at least 20 touches a game

And the coaches are happy to give multiple opportunities and stretches of games to forwards that don’t kick goals and often don’t rack possessions.

Dean Kent has played what 40 games as a 5 touch, 1 goal every 3 games, one or two games a year where ppl pass him the ball in the goal square and he ends up with 3, SFA tackles and work rate... universal disdain from the supporter face, laughter from oppositions... and they wouldn’t drop him and he was almost always the first one picked back.

I really hate to say it... in his own interest, I think Coops should ask for a trade before we shatter his confidence with special conditions applied only to him

St Kilda would normally have the injured Jack Hayes as a permanent 3rd tall.

On Friday night the Saints opted to have short forwards which obviously didn't work. I would have retained Mason Wood in the team because he can play tall forward as well as back, has a good tank and able to play pretty well anywhere on the ground, a strong mark and good kick for goal.

Someone told me recently that Cooper Sharman is out of favour because he doesn't defend well, but he is a perfect decoy up forward for Max King and did quite well in the last few rounds in 2021.

There's also a body of opinion that says Rowan Marshall should be a permanent CHF rather than 2nd ruck, which would mean playing either Tom Campbell or Max Heath as support for Paddy Ryder - sounds alright to me....

Sharman has only played 3 games in the same forward line as Max.
