The balance of youth
A bit over a year ago, I was bemoaning the fact that we had only 1 teenager on our list..Mathew Allison.
Fast forward to now, I’m delighted that we have added a further 6 to our list.
Not just that, I am very confident Heath, Windhager, NWM and Owens can become very good players for a long time.
I am also quietly confident young Peris can also make some inroads but may take some time.
Kyle has some excitement about him but it worries me that he openly complained about his running requirements pre season!
All in all, shows what a good draft can do…on the flip side, a poor draft can set a club back for years, which we’ve experienced several times.

Re: The balance of youth
He wouldn't be the first player to complain about doing extra running in the preseason and doubt he will be the last.
We have to remember kids like Kyle are only 18/19 year old, and although now on a Saints list he had only been in the NAB program for a couple of years. He will be given time and encouragement that hard work in a professional environment is rewarded. So hopefully as he matures the penny drops and he will get there. We havent seen him out there the past couple of weeks, so hopefully he returns soon.
Peris is improving with every game, I believe he will become a very good player. For such a small lad he is a great tackler and isn’t intimidated at all against the bigger bodies. His running capacities are through the roof, so when he grows a frame he will be a weapon.

Haven't seen much of Peris but I've only seen straight line speed. Is he evasive?Impatient Sainter wrote: ↑Mon 06 Jun 2022 6:36pm He wouldn't be the first player to complain about doing extra running in the preseason and doubt he will be the last.

Has Peris been tried as a midfielder or has he only been used as a forward pocket?Impatient Sainter wrote: ↑Mon 06 Jun 2022 6:36pm He wouldn't be the first player to complain about doing extra running in the preseason and doubt he will be the last.

I think for his development he should get minutes in the midfield?
St Kilda should never trade with Essendon and Sydney ever again!!!

Re: The balance of youth
Peris has plenty to learn but you can see he's got the right attitude. His speed is a huge asset.
I'm a bit concerned about Adams. Haven't seen him in weeks and he's not on the injury list. Nobody has been able to provide any information, either. To me, he looks a,likely type.
Allison is the head scratcher. Looked awful in his first few games this year. Not even VFL standard. Lately though, he's shown some signs and we just have to hope that his contract was extended because our coaches see the potential that we don't, and they're right and we're wrong

Sharman, Windhager, Owens, NWM and Heath have me very excited that there will be a strong support for our Max King era of domination. Also feel Byrnes, Connelly and Bytel will all make it too. I fear Bytel may look for more opportunities at seasons end

I don't think Bytel is going to make it at the AFL level. This is his fourth year in the system and a bunch of kids flew past him this year so the signs aren't good.Goose is king wrote: ↑Wed 08 Jun 2022 8:25pm Sharman, Windhager, Owens, NWM and Heath have me very excited that there will be a strong support for our Max King era of domination. Re: The balance of youth
Anytime Cairnsman thinks a player isn’t going to make it, you can bank on that player having a stellar career
Same when Cairnsman thinks that a player is going to be a gun if recruited to us. Odds on that player will be a fail for the Saints

Based on what we 've seen so far i can't see your prediction being true.
By this time in 2025 you might be calling yourself CloudyColin or LuckyPhil so i might not be able to remind you that your crystal ball
in 2022 was opaque.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Has missed a lot of development time. Missed last year juniors, and first AFL year with the back. Then limited VFL due to covid.saynta wrote: ↑Fri 10 Jun 2022 12:39pmHe was injured FFS.Vortex wrote: ↑Fri 10 Jun 2022 9:51amI don't think Bytel is going to make it at the AFL level. At 21, still has time on his side, just needs a big preseason and string a bunch of VFL games together to show what he can do.

Re: The balance of youth
Note Geelong always seem to hang around the top 8. Not so much with "the balance of youth" but mainly with skilled mercenaries from other clans.
I remember the caution: Old age and treachery will always beat youth and exuberance.
I think with Ratts and Lethlean ( & Hannebery?) plus the age profile of our list we might just have all bases covered. Just need fate to be kind.

These are all valid points…my main concern with young Bytel is can he play anywhere other than as a mid?Crossy66 wrote: ↑Sat 11 Jun 2022 9:38amHas missed a lot of development time. Re: The balance of youth
Bytel seems your specialist mid, like a crouch, or tom Mitchell type, so perhaps no need for him to play equally well in multiple positions. But until he gets continuity to get his running power up, then the jury will be out.Saintmike65 wrote: ↑Sat 11 Jun 2022 11:06amThese are all valid points…my main concern with young Bytel is can he play anywhere other than as a mid?Crossy66 wrote: ↑Sat 11 Jun 2022 9:38amHas missed a lot of development time. Whilst Mitch and Marcus have had promising starts, its way to early to lock them in as stars. I would be wanting to keep all 3 on the list at this stage.

Well said. Just have a look at how long it took DMac and Longy to finally establish themselves. Give Bytel another 3 years an I am confident he will be our best inside Mid.Crossy66 wrote: ↑Sat 11 Jun 2022 12:16pmBytel seems your specialist mid, like a crouch, or tom Mitchell type, so perhaps no need for him to play equally well in multiple positions.
