Membrey and Butler

Post: # 1952084Post Teflon »

Heat needs to come on these 2 a bit.
Yes King/Higgins misses we’re ordinary but reality is they are often our only true avenue to goal and that’s not flexible enough and outs on too much pressure.

Allir killed Membrey last night and often Membrey took him to spots right in front of King

Butler - poor metres gained , no scoreboard pressure abd faded second half when the game was on the line

No point being down hill skiers against a Suns etc do it when the heats on when the game is in the balance when your team needs a lift. Do what your paid to do - hit the scoreboard and take some pressure off ffs!!

I would like to see Sharman have a run in this side

Membrey would likely be top 10 in our best and fairest right now.

Butler has been saved by his pressure but agree is right on the edge of the side right now.

The obsession with Sharman is ridiculous.

Players in the VFL ahead of him include the below.

Byrnes
Billings
Jones
Highmore
Owens

And arguably
Heath
Allison
Connelly

Maybe but you also need to bring in players who can play like for like to not completely upset team balance

Membrey has been good but last night was ordinary
Long tackles better and can take a mark IF Butler is a “pressure forward” only I’m taking Long all day for that job
Butler is meant to be an opportunist goal sneak in that role he’s been poor for weeks
Sharman just might be better a level up?? He kicks straight too - could be our Fritz if we play him right….but we’ll develop him into a good back pocket…

The thing about Sharman is he did well in the seniors in his limited appearances ... and he's a reliable shot for goal.

He complemented our forward line, and took the heat off King ... and he knows when to lead and has safe hands. He just needs someone to hit
him on the chest, or deliver the ball in space ahead of him, and he'll do the rest.

It's not rocket science ... he has the tools. If he gets 4 shots at goal, he'll kick 3 goals.

He might be a good decoy for King, and be exactly what the team needs?

Sharman is no more a like for like for Butler than a byrnes.

Membrey is in his spot and has sharman covered by the length of the flemington straight.

Kings issue is accuracy not opportunity.

Marshall coming back into the side provides that genuine decoy in rotation with Ryder.

We are playing one too many smalls ... especially when the going gets tough.

After today
I’d replace Butler with Byrnes

Sharman is not a pube on Tim Membrey’s ball bag

He’s been only just in the VFL

We will improve with one less small in the side ... we need a worthy bigger-bodied player to replace one of the smalls and become a decoy for King, and if that happens to be Marshall or Ryder, that's fine.

This

The work Skunk does off the ball with spoils, tackling and pressure and his ability to get back to help the defence late in quarters is under rated by some

If Membrey keeps going missing when the heat is on like last night then the pressure will and should come
Great to bob up when Max/Higgins are dragging the side home with little pressure….doing it when they aren’t is what matters

Byrnes a headless chook last time in seems to have lost composure
If you want genuine forward pressure then Long is your man and he’s developing a nice level head on him too
I’d rather see Connolly , Lienert or even Highmore come in down back replacing Long
Connolly’s foot/evasive skills imo could see him replicate Sinclair

Geezus!! Everyone is doing great things off the ball - half the forward line is absolved from kicking goals!!

We couldn’t BUY a goal last night …..but as long as Tim put a block on from the wing we’ll be right ???

Do we think Melb will allow King/Higgins to dominate with no goal scoring help????

Get busy when it matter Tim/Dan - do your job.

Half this board is in meltdown saying we went too tall.

Not sure we're too small. An argument could be made that we have too many specialist small forwards but it holds less weight now that long and Gresham aren't exclusively small forwards. Only Butler and Higgins fit that bill.

We have two tall forwards (King + resting ruck), third tall in membrey.

We have a tall wing in wood

Backline is perfect.

Again our issue in loses this year has almost been exclusively accuracy. We're getting the shots to win games and win them comfortably- nothing is screaming change the structure/game plan and arguably there isn't much need to even change the personal. (Conceding Butler is under some pressure but ironically he brings good pressure which is valued)

We're getting the shots as a team. If anything this critique should be leveled at Higgins and King. They are the ones who didn't do their job.

OMG, are we hanging a forward pocket on metres gained?

Butler did not lose us last night's game. Look at the blokes with the most behinds next to their names. If they kicked half straight, we win.

We've lost two games this year. Last night I concede wasn't members best game.

Round 1- members 3 goals 2 and 6 score involvements.

Not sure painting him as a front runner is at all accurate. Plenty could learn from his work rate and pressure, including king.

Too simplistic to lay all our goal scoring power on King/Higgins - Melb don’t put it all on Fritz
We need a multi dimensional forward line that puts pressure on AND scores - the two aren’t mutually exclusive, it’s not one or the other nor should it be
Agree we are getting looks but even Ratten said at halftime we were 1 dimensional last night going forward??
Membrey/Butler need to be dangerous or their opponents (see Allir) will run off them and cause havoc

I'm glad you concede its about mix.

As mentioned there have been weeks where membrey and Butler have been the goal scorers.

Again if you want to be critical of someone not doing their job. Look to the players who are average at pressure AND miss their shots when the time comes.

Butler and Membrey are much more reliable with and without the ball.

(I'm not advocating for criticism of King or Higgins either- they'll come good)

If we are going to (rightly) kick Higgins/King for easy misses then we can’t ignore our other forwards in a tight game who weren’t even remotely dangerous

I think you'll find the coaches have kicking goals as a third or fourth priority for Butler.

Not everyone's role is to hit the scoreboard in a big way.

Again concede he is under pressure and could well make way for someone like Byrnes, Jones or Billings. It won't be Sharman though.

If one of the smalls makes way for Sharman, how does Sharman take Membrey's place?

Please explain?

1 +1 = 3

I don’t agree that Dan Butler gets a free pass cause he tackles lots - he needs to be dangerous on the scoreboard and not just in games when it’s over /we coast

Membrey has more credits I agree (more games like last night when the heat is on and he’ll be criticised and rightly so)

I think King/Higgins are getting plenty of heat tightly so

True re when you learn about players and concede (again) members didn't have his best game last night. However as mentioned, he was great in our other loss against Collingwood and has been good all year.

He's far from a decoy, if that's all he was your Sharman argument would hold some weight.

Who is giving him a free pass? Multiple times it's been conceded he is under pressure. Only comments I see is that he has, to date, held his spot based on other attributes and that Sharman wouldn't be a good alternative.
