Seb Ross
Almost career best form at the moment
Has had better individual games then his his 5 so far in 2022 but he’s consistently getting the ball, very accountable to his man, his errors have reduced…
Has been a delight to watch so far this season.
Hopefully gone are the days of 15 odd touches and the defence of doing his role was the justification to criticisms of him.
Coincidentally you see the criticisms of him have slowed down too putting an end to the silly narrative of the anti-Ross agenda.
Seems like he’s a real on field leader at the moment
Keep up the good work Seb

Seems that if you are more than a ‘role player’ and ‘accumulator’ you will be recognized as such

Interesting to see what happens to Seb once Jones comes back into the side as he has taken his on ball spot at the moment

Seb’s effort is infectious
Seb Ross is a leader and a role model. He is performing whatever role the coaches ask of him and I’d love for him to be a premiership player for us

A very good game from Seb, his best in a few years.
But remember his best form got him two B&F's, a runner up B&F, and an All Australian selection.

As an elder statesman, he is playing great without a high level of expectation. Allowing the kids to take the floor.
Perfect spot for him and obviously enjoying himself

Great thread Skeptic.
Seb has looked super intense and competitive, and skill level through the roof. He looks aggressive and attacking. Nice to watch.

Re: Seb Ross
He has suffered from average disposal under pressure most of his career.
He is in fantastic form and has found his niche in a much fitter and more talented team and has more support now than he has ever had around him.
I've been highly critical of his disposal but everything is in sync at the moment.

Re: Seb Ross
Had a pretty handy midfield in 2016 & 2017
Steven, Ross, Armitage, Steele, Stevens
Won 23 out of 44 games
Ross has got no better or no worse… just playing standard Seb Ross games

Suddenly - at 28yo
Credit must go to the coaches then!!!
We can’t have bagged him out for 3 years and been wrong … surely

Re: Seb Ross
There is no suddenly. 300 kicks and 330 handballs in 2017. Close to half those kicks went nowhere and if it wasn't for Roberton's influence, they would have ended up in a lot more goal. He was a 1 in 4 chance of a turnover. Kick and hope is no longer a thing.
I prefer him with only 450 disposal 'between his flags'. Running to space and bursting through stoppages got him brownlow votes.
Playing defensive roles has changed his game. Same engine, different computer running it.
Roberton was the best footballer at the club in 2017.

Not in the coaches eyes - B&F and most votes in coaches award
The umpires eyes - most votes in the Brownlow
Media’s eyes - highest poller in all media awards
Supporters eyes - SS player of the year - easily
But if you say so
Roberton was good in 2017 but let’s not rewrite history

Re: Seb Ross
Very silly to suggest that Seb’s form hasn’t waned or fluctuated in recent years.
Majority of forumites were calling for him to be dropped mid 2020 when he was getting 12-15 touches a game, touched up by his opponent and more regularity with the howlers.
Your staunch defence BM, including your more infamous ‘he was playing his role’ comment against whatever interstate match that was when he was playing the midfield and was unsighted for almost 2.5 quarters and you jumped from opponent to opponent he was tagging (only to be proven wrong) is what led to the melodrama that comes with assessing his performance.
You and a few others that is.
Tends to draw negative attention and solidify stances when get dog food and call it steak.
Seb has had a number of patches or games over the last 4 years where he has been serviceable bordering on mediocre. Had a number of efforts that’s have been down right terrible.
Is that a big sin? Absolutely not. Players get beaten periodically.
The point is however, that at this point in time, Ross isn’t in the team to be ok, show promise, do an invisible roles etc
He’s there to play like he’s been playing this season. Possession, role, leadership, toughness. All Consistently. Not some of them some of the time.
And yes obviously his 5 games this year are not meant to be direct comparison to his full 2017. Don’t need to take things so literally.
But the mere fact that your suggesting he hasn’t wavered at all, really does highlight the extent of your bias. You like him so much that when he has average games you make up excuses... whereas all the “Ross Haters” are suddenly not haters anymore but are consistently offering praise as he is consistently playing well.
Weird how that works isn’t it. Almost like there is no vendetta... never was perhaps.

Re: Seb Ross
Maybe Cho or the umpires aren't the best judges and maybe history should be rewritten. No one can take away what Sebby has earned for himself, however I disagree that he was our best and most influential player in 2017 and I think that coaches and commentators and people voting for subjective awards can sometimes get it wrong. We've seen it several times this year with Jack Sinclair excluded from coaches votes and Gresham included or Higgins includedCQ SAINT wrote: ↑Sun 17 Apr 2022 12:16amAgain. One thing is for certain. Voting is subjective. Voting can be influenced by people ...who have influence.
I like watching quite a few games and last year or the year before I watched a few from 2017. Coincidentally, I heard something interesting during a Friday night game.
This was one of many Friday and Saturday night games that we had that year and which were telecast on channel 7 in 2017
Interestingly....there is a bloke who commentates on channel 7 who is related to Sebby. Interestingly there is a bloke called Bruce on channel 7 who loves stats and loves to rabbit on and use hyperbole at every opportunity
Bruce claimed Sebby had come of Age. Interestingly... in the rounds before this match, most commentators and most of the forumites on Saintsational had Dylan in front on the voting for player of the year and also with votes for coaches association and other competitions it was Jack Steven and Dylan Roberton leading the votes.
I think most people like to be told how to think because most of them don’t know how to think for themselves.
The reason that people were ‘aware’ of how well Seb was playing was because they were being ‘told’ how well he was playing in 2017 by the media and in particular by Bruce and co. who were sucking up Timmy Watson’s arse because he is their colleague and one of the most senior power brokers among the channel seven commentators. Get on Timmy’s side if you want to be in the good books and what better way than to pump up the nephew.
After all, the nephew did perform admirably and his disposal stats were good. Maybe it’s the stats alone and the sucking up is just an added bonus...who knows
All I know is that if the media tell you Seb was best on ground for St Kilda then who are we to argue...right? If Bruce or Lingy or Darcehole or Dwaynepipe or the umpires tell us it’s true... it must be right??
I challenge anyone here to watch a few games from early and mid season 2017 and just turn the volume down and watch Seb’s possessions versus a guy like Membrey or Carlisle or Joey Montagna or Josh Bruce. Some of the games had some outstanding team performances and some brilliant individual performances and yet in most of them you had sheeple giving Sebby the top votes whenever he was the top possession gatherer
No one would have thought it possible that Jack Steele would get best on ground against Freo over at Freo because Jack was dropped several times by Richo in 2017 and he was making his return into the senior line up that week. Steele made a lunging tackle that turned the game for us with only seconds to go in the 3rd quarter. Freo were already a goal up and Steele stopped a Freo player in his tracks after a game saving effort that would have had the Freo supporters urging their lads home and would have given Freo a two goal lead heading into the last quarter. Jack had about 17 tackles that day. That is phenomenal!! ( https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/match- ... layerstats https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/match- ... FL20171509 ) No way would you give him bog when an expert like his coach didn’t even rate him best 22 at the time. What a croc!! What poor judges sheeple were!!
Countless times in games in 2017 we had guys like Roberton setting us up for wins and I reckon Dylan’s ability to spot a target and his intercepts, tackles, his spoils and his contested possessions, his marking and especially his offensive plays were worth twice as much as each touch that was gifted to some of the mids

What a load of rubbish. You certainly wander down some strange paths Scollop. So Ch7 and Timmy pumped Seb up so much he won all those awards in 2017, including B & F, 14 or so Brownlow votes? I think you overate the influence of the media, except maybe on yourself.Scollop wrote: ↑Sun 17 Apr 2022 4:11amMaybe Cho or the umpires aren't the best judges and maybe history should be rewritten. What's Jack Steele got to do with it? Strange. Anyway, in 2017 you should remember he was not the player he is now, was having a quieter patch, inR12 he didn't have a good game, about 4 kicks, we got thrashed by the Crows, and he was dropped. Came back in R15, played a very intense and determined game, laid 17 tackles, and hasn't really looked back since. Dropping him had a pretty good consequence, yes? Good move by the coaching team.
I'm with BM. Seb is a very good player, and has been since 2016. Not much has changed since. I think a few supporters just have some helicopter kicks influencing their memory. All players have their ups and downs, Seb's had a few good games this year, if he continues that form for the rest of the year, he will equate his performance with 2017 and 2019, albeit in a better team.

Re: Seb Ross
Seb has been maligned on this forum for years and I don’t get it. There are guys who have been VFL standard who escaped bashing while multiple calls for Seb to be dropped or traded.
He is a solid B grade AFL footballer and will probably notch 250 games. Not a bad return for an early 2nd round pick. Is he bagged because he is not consistently A grade?
His attributes are fitness, he puts his head over it, he’s a team player, his training standards are high, he’s a decent solid citizen, he’s a good reader of the ball off hands at stoppages and judges when to dish off or take the game on pretty well on most occasions.
At his best he’s been A grade, anyone who can get it 30 times and be BOG multiple times is a very good AFL footballer.
His down side is his kicking is not A grade and he sometimes rushes disposal and turns it over.
Also the stop and prop and go sideways he was renowned for during the Rich era was infuriating. But was this game plan or Seb?
The fact he has won 2 x B&F is more about the depth of the club at the time. Goddard, Dal Santo, Montagna, Gehrig, Milne, etc didn’t win multiple or some even 1 B&F and no one would rank Seb above these guys as player.
Now Seb is behind Steele, Crouch, Gresh, Jones et Al and is the 5th or 6th midfielder at the club he’s all of a sudden improved and in career best form which is inaccurate IMO.
He seems to have a bit more license to attack and the team is playing well and they are enjoying their footy again, and low and behold Seb is playing well and most importantly contributing when the going is tough and game is in the balance.
If we start losing a few in a row I bet Seb quickly returns to the scapegoat
