Potential round 1 debutants

Post: # 1939739Post saynta »

From the heraldsun.com.au

"ST KILDA

Potential R1 debutants: Jack Hayes (train-on)

Hayes, 24, is no spring chicken but the train-on player is capable of filling a role immediately at the next level. The mobile big man, who has dominated for Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL for several years, is the players in the mix for one of St Kilda’s vacant list spots. After impressing in match practice, the pre-season matches shape as an important period for the South Australian as he chases an AFL berth. St Kilda’s first selection Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera fills a need with his elite kicking and looms as an inclusion at some stage this year, but will it be early? Athletic 193cm forward Cooper Sharman’s rapid rise from the SANFL Reserves to the AFL ranks last year culminated in a rousing four-goal haul in the final round. His three goals in the recent Saints trial game suggests there is more excitement to come as he vies to cement a spot in the Saints attack."

IF we can come in tot he season with a full list - bar Coffield and Geary for Round 1 can't see any debutants, and realistically withe the demographic of our group would be concerned if players got leapfrogged by new players at this point in time.

Training reports suggest that NMW isn’t anywhere near debut yet. Suggestion is that he’ll need time to build up. I would say Windhager has got the most positive feedback so far and looks the most likely for rd1 at this time

Doesn’t get a mention in the “article” though.

Don’t know why Cooper is brought up at all in a discussion about debutants

Agreed, with a healthy list there may be no debutants.
The most likely maybe Jack Hayes if Ryder fails to come up.
On the upside, it appears only a matter of time before NWM, Owens and Windhager debut.

I think we could play with just Marshall and Hayes come round 1. The versatility given by Hayes is too good to pass up, presuming he can break even (or just short of break-even) in the ruck contests.

No Highmore or Howard gives the other blokes a chance to show us that they deserve a spot!

It will make for some interesting positioning: Campbell as the main ruckman, Joyce as full back, Hayes to play back up ruckman & 2nd tall forward, Lienert to get minutes as required, Gresham & Paton will play managed minutes, then rotating 26 players thru the interchange will take some doing.

I wish everyone that measures a players height used a standard system.

How can a 24 year old players height be either 192 cm or 193cm or 194 cm depending on who is writing the fluff piece.

It can't be that hard to measure someones height accurately, consistently.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?
