Ryan Byrnes serious hamstring injury.

Post: # 1888594Post Gershwin »

"Surgery for Saints youngster Byrnes

St Kilda youngster Ryan Byrnes is set for a delayed start to the season after suffering a serious hamstring tendon injury.

Sources familiar with the situation confirmed Byrnes will undergo surgery this week in a blow that is likely to sideline him for a couple of months.

Recruited from the Sandringham Dragons, Byrnes, 19, played a single senior game for the Saints last year after being drafted at pick 52 in 2019.

St Kilda earlier this month announced he had extended his contract for an extra season, tying him to Moorabbin until the end of 2022.

The Saints are due to release an extensive injury update later on Tuesday.

Mature-age recruit Shaun McKernan underwent scans on Monday after rolling his ankle last week.

Injury-prone veteran Dan Hannebery has endured another interrupted pre-season with a calf issue."

That sounds like a nasty and unusual injury for a youngster.

I thought tendon hamstring in juries were more a mature age players domain, but may be way off the mark.

Hope he recovers well, I was hoping to see him play 6-8 games this season.

Indeed. Hope it’s not one of those never quite come back the same type injuries... unfortunately I associate it with this and broken legs. Hopefully I’m off the mark with both

Hopefully not a Nathan Freeman injury!

He is a similar size and style of player to Freeman, both main strength is breaking away from stoppage with acceleration.

Let’s hope it doesn’t effect his pace

Was thinking more a Jason Cripps...
Few can measure up to a Riewoldt

Riewoldt tore his hamstring tendon in 2010

It depends a bit where you tear it?

Freeman and Cripps did a lot of damage, it took them a long time to recover

On the other hand

Riewoldt was only out for about 16 weeks

Two other Saints players did hamstring tendons in the pre season and were back within 10 weeks

There isn't any need or gain to the club for Byrnes to return with the next 3 to 4 months. The club should just take him out of the equation and give him all the time he needs. He probably wont be weight baring for a month then he should rehab for 4-8 weeks, then he will need to regain fitness, hopefully he can finish the 2nd half of the season with Sandy and build up some strength in preparation for next year.

Yes, no rush on Ronnie

If you do it twice, you’re pretty much done!!!
