Re: Go Saints!!!
It was commissioned by the then new President (and his board) around 1976 (IIRC)
There was a video produced at the same time which featured Paul Morwood a lot.
They were trying to emulate what Footscray had done in the Western Suburbs and wanted to become the 'Southern Saints
I went to a pre-season presentation where the video/song were played.
It was when we recruited Brad Gotch.

" Lots of "true" Saints can't recall a song we sang at full tilt every week half pissed and ankle deep in mud, whilst getting belted mercilessly by everyone week after week, season after season." Quote from my father in law when I mentioned this song to him.
He said it was late 70's early 80's
He also told me to f@ck off to future and let him know if we actually win a season....cheeky ol bastard.

Re: Go Saints!!!
The Southern Saints idea was mainly in anticipation of regions of Victoria which traditionally had no ties to VFL clubs, being threatened by the expansion interstate. It was anticipated that the Western Australian and South Australian teams would be strong and and the success and popularity of interstate teams would attract Victorian supporters. Hawthorn considered the Eastern Hawks, Essendon the Western Bombers and I think.the Northern Roos was considered by Norf.

My favourite part is when he rhymed ‘saints’ with ‘saints’

Let's face it, pissed after a win at Moorabbin, you'd sing just about anything but I do remember the fight back verses being sung pretty loud at the time.

Re: Go Saints!!!
So what I gathered from this is that
- Joffa isn't old enough to know the song
- A few posters will bag anything that Nick posts
- Saint-Lee's Father in Law is missing a decade
- You can find a lot of s*** on Youtube if you look hard enough
- Nick is likely a previous poster but there is no absolute consensus as to who .... though I have my suspicions
Don't mind the song itself as it brings back memories of those brilliant/awful crazy days down at Moorabbin during the 80s.

OMG - There are 2 versions. The one I have is different. I can't find the CD mind you but it's somewhere. Same words but different singer and the music is not as jazzy.kosifantutti wrote: ↑Mon 13 Jan 2020 7:06pmThe Fireman wrote: ↑Mon 13 Jan 2020 6:36pm I liked it then and I like it now.... i'm stepping outside of my comfort zone to say good post NG...don't expect too many more
