Grant Thomas, a man who seems painfully aware that he is becoming increasing irrelevant to the public conversation about AFL football
Hard to argue with that, regardless of what you think of the person who wrote it.

Who does he write for?... WWOS.com??

Radio?... nup.

TV?... FC, one of the worst footy shows of all time... will be amazed if it's still on (or he's on it) next year.

Every year a new crop of freshly retired players and coaches moves into the media arena... and surely GT knows he has failed to carve a sustainable niche for himself thus far.

In addition to his recent ill-timed swipe at Milne, and this latest embarrassment, I notice he even tried to blame poor Rhys Palmer for breaking Barlow's leg, in order to gain some notoriety for himself... he'll probably announce he's to be starring in a porno with Warwick Capper next.

"irrelevant to the public conversation about AFL football"

Hahaah!!

Are you kidding me? the man breaks wind and there's instantly a 10 page Saintsational thread on it - guaranteed to be posted in by you!!

The man makes a comment to a journo over the phone and it gets the back page of the Herald-Sun!

He makes comment to a journo about stuff that happened 5 years ago, and not only are we onto the 4th page of a thread on it - there's an article written by Patrick Smith about him!!

You crack me up.

If your interpretation of 'relevant to the public conversation about AFL football' encompasses people on the highly regarded SS and in some sections of the football media really only debating and discussing how much of a twat he is... then yes, I suppose he is.

I'm not defending anyone.

I just feel the need to point out things like the above. Sadly, when you challenge people's hypocritical, contradictory and in some cases just moronic comments - you get accused of defending GT!
Semantics RF. Both are opinion-spruikers. Smith - like them or not - thinks his through. Thomas's are usually the attention seeking ramblings of a spotlight sl*t.

We differ because you seem to think all opinion is s***. I'm not so black and white. Some opinions have plenty of merit.

Nonsense. Smith is an angry man bent on revenge. Any info he gets is discraded very quickly as his personal and nasty emotion takes over.
Thinline wrote:Thomas's are usually the attention seeking ramblings of a spotlight sl*t.
The only thing I would say in 'defense' of Thomas giving his opinion - is that he's speaking from experience.
He's played footy at the highest level. He represented his state. Was a runner up B&F.
He's been a selector at the highest level. He's coached at the highest level. He's been on the board of a footy club at the highest level.

Whether he's right or not, whatever his motives are - he has the wood on most footy 'journalists' on this regard.
Thinline wrote: We differ because you seem to think all opinion is s***. I'm not so black and white. Some opinions have plenty of merit.
Opinion isn't shiit necessarily - I just don't really see the relevance in it - and as I said, particularly when it's written by someone with zerop experience in the field they're giving opinion on.
And getting back to the original 'debate' (albeit not started in this thread) I fail to see how a Patrick Smith opinion piece can be described as a 'great article'.

When I read about Cousins and then Thomas I was curious about the side effects of the combination of drugs. It seems that sleeping tablets themselves have side-effects which are exacerbated by alcohol consumption. Apparently confusion and irritability are likely to occur the morning after taking this combination - I am not sure how caffeine then interacts as well with this. But the effects are different for each person. Nevertheless I am sure that mood-changing drugs would have a negative effect on your capacity to work - or your work relationships.
It astounded me that Thomas thought it was no big deal to admit that he was reviewing matches whilst on the "cocktail". Honestly, how would he take a player turning up to "work" under the same influences?
It is strange that GT did not think it would have an impact on how people in the wider community would view his psychological stability and capacity to undertake further high-stress occupations. Amazing!
Here is a list of sleeping tablet side-effects for one well-known one. If GT could just tell us which one he was on - then we could assess what the likely effects would be when combined with alcohol - which increases the likelihood of side-effects occurring. But turning up to work the next day being confused, irritable and drowsy would not make for a good start to the day.

* an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, face, or tongue; hives); or
* hallucinations, abnormal behavior, or severe confusion.

Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur.

* headache, drowsiness, dizziness, or clumsiness
* nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation
* depression
* muscle aches or pains
* vivid or abnormal dreams
* amnesia (memory loss) after a dose, sometimes significant

The most common side effects seen were:

* daytime drowsiness in 2%
* dizziness in 1%
* diarrhea in 1%

Examples of mental effects of sleeping pills are irritability, confusion, tremors, nervousness and hallucinations. Ironically, some types of sleeping pills can even make people have difficulty sleeping! The effects are different on each patient,

I just cant believe/understand the hatred here.
He stated that he learnt the "techinque" from the players.
SO obvioiusly players were turning up as zombies as well werent they???
As I said way back where is the same outrage at Lenny Hayes?

I'm o/s and haven't seen/read much footy news other than on here.
Did I miss the articles where it was established that Lenny Hayes (or any other player):-

took caffeine pills

and combined them with

alcohol

and combined them with

sleeping pills

and then turned up to review the game tapes as well as implement strategies for the following game?

I'm pretty sure I've only seen an admission from GT about this so I'm wondering where the players' admissions are?

I think Lennie admitted to some caffeine use but I don't care about that. It is the "cocktail" that is relevant.
I like a drink myself - but would expect to get the sack if I worked "over a bottle of red wine" and put this on the public record - almost like adding it as an addendum to my CV - not to mention the effect of the combination(s) and hangover. Not clever!
And this is the guy who was sacking players for drink-driving and disciplining them for acting up after work. If he was at the club reviewing matches, drinking, editing (if he actually did do this himself) and then driving home - it just makes me wonder about his judgement and the implicit double-standards.
He coached quite well for a couple of years but was he "performing to the best of his ability"?

FAIR DINKUM
The sleeping tablets completely messed with his ability to function properly the next day. ''You'd have to wake up at 6 o'clock to get to the footy club again with your eyes hanging out of your head. It wasn't a good scenario.''
The megalomaniacal maestro appoints himself in a sham process, pays himself $500,000 a year with no previous AFL coaching experience, insists on absolute 100% full control of the football department and the buffoon was pissed and off his head on pills the whole time!

FAIR DINKUM

Sacked and not a minute too soon before he shipped Milne off to Essendon, but not before he managed to send a playing list from heaven half way to hell in five years, while destroying a relationship with our VFL affiliate and overseeing shambolic recruiting with boy wonder Bundy by his side,

as if pick 6 in the National Draft wasn't enough for Barry Brooks, they threw in a second rounder to sweeten the deal to the ex- club boy wonder happened to be affiliated with,...... seriously

How could such inanity happen?
''You'd have to wake up at 6 o'clock to get to the footy club again with your eyes hanging out of your head. It wasn't a good scenario.''

Probably explains a great deal!

Perhaps Bundy was also helping out some old mates at Port at the very same time!

The only rookie to come through under Thomas was Milne and he can take no credit for recruiting Milne to begin with and in the end was going to give him the flick, thank flick they flicked the right flick just in flicking time!

Zero rookies, zero, zilch, nada, nought, nothing, absolutely SFA!

Without bothering to check the exact number there were about five rookies in West Coast's 2006 premiership team.

Insisted the club spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on two week overseas holidays disguised as training camps and Mr Snakeoil can't even get the team fully fit for the requirements of AFL football!

FAIR DINKUM

And not to mention Jason Blake in the ruck with no numbers behind the ball, seriously at least we now know Blake wasn't the only one getting smashed at the time!

When I spoke to Mick McGuane and questioned this inanity he responded with "We prefer to back our own players", FAIR DINKUM

That was the entire gameplan, just send them out with the mission to beat their opponent, with no tactics or gameplan whatsoever!

Did I mention playing Jason Blake in the ruck with no instruction to the midfield to get numbers behind the ball?

At least we can now put this down to him being totally sloshed at the time as some sort of explanation for this complete and utter buffoonery!
''You'd have to wake up at 6 o'clock to get to the footy club again with your eyes hanging out of your head. It wasn't a good scenario.''
FAIR DINKUM

And then we come to fitness and conditioning and injury management,

oh dear

Grant "fitness and conditioning staff are overrated" Thomas in control of the entire football department and responsible for one of the most crucial elements in a team's success was off his head, on the piss and popping pills the whole time!

FAIR DINKUM

To think of all the know nothing, numbnuts, nuffies, suckholes, brown noses, GT doll worshipping sheep, the easily conned dingbats, douchebags, dunderheads, a gaggle of geeks, gumps, gimps and goatriders who fell for the snake oil routine and lined up for the poisoned cordial,........ they who abused me on here for years when I suggested (on at least one occasion), that Thomas was pissing our chances up against the wall and didn't have a FAIR DINKUM clue!:roll:

Shame on you all!

Apologies are in order!

:lol:

Yeah I might have to re-think the invitation for coffee and a chat, I had no idea we'd be getting sloshed on red and high on coffee tar and pills, changes everything, oh Grant please forgive me for not getting back to you for three years, is the invite still on?

Thomas didn't take the No-Doz tablets used by many AFL players as part of their pre-match routines. But he started experimenting with extreme caffeine jolts after becoming aware of St Kilda players who believed the legal substance helped their performance.

For the coach, it started with a cup of ''tar'' - roughly half a cup of coffee granules mixed into a small amount of boiling water - one day before a match, and progressed from there.
