SANDY vs Port Melbourne 22/8- reports

Agreed. Thought he helped Sandy dominate the clearances early in the 2nd and his disposal was good all day. Interesting he had so many more kicks than handballs - perhaps a directive to focus on backing his footskills, or a decision by Bally himself to show that he can set up play by foot (or even just the circumstances he found himself in??)?Iceman234 wrote:sRr, fair call generally, but Bally would have been credited with 3, possibly 4 goal assists today.
I thought he was very creative, and still got in and under.

Fair enough....but it might depend on what yardstick you are using for comparison.Spinner wrote:
I strongly disagree with this comment.
But in my opinion for a player that wants to be considered elite his ball use was not at AFL elite standard.
Did I see signs of exceptional ball use? No.
Did I see ball use that was good by VFL yardsticks? Yes.

Thought Geary was the standout Sandy player today. He found space was hard and kicking 3 goals was a bonus. Will be first in should we need an additonal runner going forward.
Eddy and Ball were both good. I thought Ball was hard in and under and the lack of skill of some of the teammates meant that some of his handballs out under pressure were fumbled.
Seem to find a bit more space which is obviously something they are looking for. Onkly RL will know as tactics and not touches will get him back in.
Steven will be good next year. Has pace and takes game on, which leads to mistakes but you like that trying to be confident and back yourself.
Tough day for Bigs with the wind .

Spot on , VFL and AFL are poles apart , If anyone thinks that Lukes performance today would cause any damage in an AFL game well --------------------- kidding .
I guess we will have to wait and see how Ross sees it wont we , and no i dont dislike him in any way , i just want to win a flag

Its not whether he's elite or not, but is he good enough to make the firsts at the minute. On today's performance i would say yes, is there a spot, not sure.saintsRrising wrote:Fair enough....but it might depend on what yardstick you are using for comparison.Spinner wrote:

Nope nothing to do with yard sticks - I just found that most of his possessions were effective, and more importantly his decision making in terms of 'ball use' was good.
He hit targets, and found players on the lead within the forward line - something incredible rare in the lesser standard of footy.
In fact, I don't think he could have done much more with the disposal opportunities that he had. The term 'hurting the opposition' is one of the biggest through away comments in modern football, and definitely wouldn't be the terminology I would use to describe Ball's game today.

Very impressed with Jack Steven today. Love his toughness and speed and the way his doesn't just give it off, but runs past to get it back again, a la G Ablett.
Also impressed with Geary and look forward to a top year from him next year. Wouldn't surprise to see him playing in September, either. Well done to Bally, too. He unfortunately looks right at home at that level, though. Some long goal from Rhys Stanley, into the wind, too. 55m. I look forward to lots of them for the Saints for years to come!

Sandringham was allowed to play 12 St Kilda players against unaligned Port Melbourne.
I saw
Rhys Stanley, Ben McEvoy, Tom Lynch,
Max Hudghton, Colm Begley, Luke Miles,
Jarryn Geary, Luke Ball, Leigh Fisher,
Robert Eddy, Jack Steven, Tom Simpkin.
That means David Armitage and Nick Heyne were missing.
Armitage was withheld as St Kilda's emergency.
Did Heyne play for Sandringham reserves, was he held back as a Sandringham seniors emergency or was he a late withdrawal due to injury?

I think some of the required delistings could come from that lot...including rookies....

btw it seems that the game had shown what we all know
max's body is not up to it
ball is not up to it
geary is close and it will depend on match ups (will play in gwilts spot against the dogs first week IMO)
steven is class and long term
big ben has come on leaps and bounds and would play finals if not for two very good rucks
lynch will be a BEAUTY

The Zebras played with purpose in the first half, kicking the first two goals and running the lines.
Luke Ball smothered and tackled with courage and Jarryn Geary went wherever the cause demanded.
Geary and Ball had 18 disposals in the first half with Geary also booting three goals.

But Hudghton, who was dropped from the St Kilda line-up along with Luke Ball, struggled to play the first half of the match after feeling a slight twinge in the left hamstring.
He appeared only briefly in the third term before sitting out the rest of the match.
<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Jarryn Geary was superb for Sandringham, with 34 disposals and three goals, and will press for selection against Melbourne next week along with Ball, who had 40 disposals.
Robert Eddy overcame a hamstring scare in the first quarter to snare 24 disposals and Jack Steven was influential with 29 possessions.
