Birss is a victim of contract mis-management IMO.
The fact that Fiora & L.Fisher were contracted for 2009 meant that someone who was unfortunately out of contract would get the flick.
I'm not going to start up another Fiora bashing sessions (I've started enough of those!) but it's annoying that a solid depth player gets his marching orders ahead of others who deserve the chop much much more.
Fisher probably was saved by Dempster's injury & may see some more game time in 09 in the mid sized defender/tagger role.
I'm still p1ssed off we have traded out of the 2nd round too. Would have been better to just give the Dogs our 3rd rounder straight for Ray, who was going to walk no matter what. Just plain stupidity to trade a 2nd round pick in a really strong draft (pick 31 in 08 is probably as strong a pick in the late teens in 06,07).

If he were to reach his full potential he would be no better than Sam Gilbert or Raph Clarke, we have too many similar positioned players...

Ferg has ended up 3rd the biggest waste of Saints draft picks stakes this decade. He's a combination of the worst aspects of Xavier Clark and Charlie Gardiner, and can only aspire to be Shane Birss, Aaron Fiora or Leigh Fisher. They're at least passengers (and on rare occasions more), Ferg wasn't even good enough for long enough at a stretch to be carried by the passengers (ala "the suitcase": Anthony Corrie, premiership player extraordinaire). The saving graces for him are the unfortunate careers of Barry Brooks and Fergus Watts.barks4eva wrote:Birss should have been delisted last year,
Fiora and L.Fisher are just a waste of space.
Ferguson should have been retained and given as many opportunities that all three mentioned have already had more than their fair share of!
It's incredibly hypocrytical for anyone who has ever complained about retread draft picks to waste the time pumping up Ferg. Talent he may have had, but so did Brooks and Watts. Consider: McGough cost us pick 49 and gave us 12 games, Ackland pick 33 and gave us 41 games. Ferguson cost us pick 22 and pick 74 and gave us 12 games. Even Phil Raymond (0 games) only cost us pick 63 once, and Justin Sweeney's game came for the price of pick 71 once.
Btw Barks, don't you think it's about time they gave GT a parade?
