Luckily the coaches pick the side and not some of you.

Unbelievable. Stanley is not half as good as Blake was and you believe he could be a star? He has played two good game in his entire career, and both of them were in the pre-season cup. Hickey has displayed more leadership than Stanley already. If Stanley had played on some of the players that Gwilt has, his stats would be even worse.
And as for people calling Blake a gumby; Stanley can only dream of being half the clubman that Blake was.

Gwilt is a liability and is the worst backman in the competition. There is no worse player in a back 6 than him.
Stanley plays a difficult position and is learning his craft well. He will be a star.

Which role is that mate? Ruckman? No chance; Hickey and Longer already ahead of him. Backman; don't think so, got flogged every week that they tried him down back. Forward; he doesn't know how to lead, and he has already been at the club for four years.

Rhys is the type of player that makes that makes a good team great.

I don't think he is the type of player that makes a poor team look good.

More Shane Savage than Nick Riewoldt

I guess I must be missing something. I just can't see it. Wish I could.

TBH I cant believe how little a physical contest he creates for someone his size! His forward coach is one of the hardest most competitive players to pull on a Saints jumper, perhaps he needs to be harshly pointed out just how soft he looks at times!

Blake was absolute gumby for 50 per cent of his career, until he matured into a half-decent defender. And now he's remembered as a loyal servant, etc.

Stanley will get there but only when he feels completely comfortable about taking on the contest. It's like anything...you need to learn how to do it. He just hasn't learned yet.

However, when the games wash through his system - I'm talking 100+ - we'll have a really effective 200cm player on our list. They don't grow on trees. We're not in contention right now for a flag and can afford to be extremely patient with him.
What you on brother.

I'm thinking Stewie Lowe would be a good mentor for him, played a similar role for the club, and couldn't kick to save himself earlier on in his career, but then the club persevered with him and ended up as one of our greatest. Couldn't we get him in for a bit of part time coaching?

This is his 6th year.
And he still has no idea how to lead and no desire to compete.

This is the same convo we were having with Kosi, when Gwilt played forward in 2009, Lee, Maister etc.

When anyone else is in a forward line that has Nick Riewoldt in it, what should anyone expect?

Furthermore, Stanley is playing key forward in a crap team.

The result?

not much.

Actually, I would put it this way:

Rhys is the type of player who makes a good team great.

But he is also the type of player who makes a poor team look worse.

I would hate to see Rhys Stanley inheriting the mantle of Raph Clarke, Troy Schwarze, Jason Blake, and others who over the journey have tried hard, but have been unable to dodge the dubious "honour" of being the resident scapegoat for all manner of problems. Rhys needs ( IMHO) to get more mongrel into his game, I do hope that he makes the grade, but if after the end of this season, and a reasonable opportunity to cement his spot, he has not improved, then the twos have to be his starting place in 2015

Watching Raph play today shows me exactly the player he was and how he was misunderstood….

Rhys would not get a game in a good team and if he did he wouldn't get a touch because he couldnt read the play quickly enough.

Won't happen, Jiggster. He has the wrong temperament. He's as mild mannered as Clark Kent. Unfortunately, he has Kryptonite poisoning which will keep him at the status of pleb and never to become a footy superstar.

I think skeptic summed it up too a tee.
If Rhys slotted into hawthorn he'd do well, at the same time slot say Gunstan into us,probably no big star
but you pinch Roughhead with Roo, probably be ok.

Please don't compare Stewart Loewe to him

In his 4th year he was a best and fairest at 22

At Rhys's age he was
A dual AA
3 times state rep and EJ Whitten medallist
One of the best players in the game

One of the most courageous aerialists in the games history
