Re: Tom Lynch kicks three
Never seen him try and present well like that when he played with us

Gwilt dominated at Sandy in 2009.....when he was first used as a key back.....prior to that, he was used as a mid and a medium fwd. Fisher was 22 in his first season at Casey and played 16 games
Lynch and gwilt can be compared.....gwilt was at stk for 5 years before he became a regular, lynch never got that long......mark my words lynch is a solid footballer

Sorry but to me is a slow HFF. Well that was how he played at our club.
Re: Tom Lynch kicks three
It seems Adelaide may get better use out of him......smart footballer.
I noticed this in 2009 when he worked in tandem with nick sautner to create space and allow sautner do his thing...

Re: Tom Lynch kicks three
He's an undersized lead up forward. In todays footy climate it will be tough for him. However he is a smart footballer and could play a similar role to Bob Murphy.
I certainly wasn't impressed with him at the Saints. Too slow and too soft at the contest.
What pick did we get for him? Was it Newnes?

If he's half as good as Murphy, it means he was twice as good as the blokes playing that "defensive forward " role ahead of him at St Kilda.
Riewoldt and Goddard to live up to their reputations ,Clarke and Ray to defy theirs in 2012!

Newnes is very highly rated and was a good pick up according to a mate who saw a bit of him. Hope Newnes gets going early at least.

The much-vaunted defensive forward role that has seem some awfully shithouse footballers get games with us.whiskers3614 wrote:If he's half as good as Murphy, it means he was twice as good as the blokes playing that "defensive forward " role ahead of him at St Kilda.

Re: Tom Lynch kicks three
yep the problem isn't that we struggle to "develop players" it's that all the ones we pick are duds
Re: Tom Lynch kicks three
Couple of things need to be corrected
1- Tom Lynch definitely ain't Soft
2- He played the entire of 2011 and Half of 2010 as a defender, not a forward
3- He ain't small, if you think so, you have never stood beside him.....same size as Sam Fisher

Good luck to him I hope he makes it - it will be another reminder to the SAINTS on how poor their player development was under the LYON era ...
SAINTS another day older another day closer to the Holy Grail!

Can you please tell us all the players that we have cut in the last 4 years that have made it at other clubs? And fancy hoping a guy will make it to stick it our club. Strange indeed. i hope he makes it for himself.

Re: Tom Lynch kicks three
I did. In his game against West Coast in Perth last year he presented really well and had a fine game, doing plenty of good things, which I and several others commented on at the time and were excited about. I was really disappointed that he missed the next week with the finger injury and was even more disappointed that when he came back, the week after, it was to the VFL, not straight back into our senior side (where there was still a suitable spot available). If he'd had a few games in row, to build on that West Coast game, he could have gotten some momentum and confidence, but instead he got yo-yo'ed in and out of the side and was subbed out of possibly every game that he did play in, which I doubt would have done much for his confidence.Enrico_Misso wrote:Never seen him try and present well like that when he played with us
He also presented really well across half forward like that for us in the NAB Cup game against Geelong last year. I went away from that game really impressed by what I saw from him and had high hopes that he'd have a good season.

Re: Tom Lynch kicks three
Luke BALL and Tommy WALSH are good starts and dont say they weren't cut because they were forced out by LYON. I do hope he sticks it up the Saints because he didn't get much a go with us! A good reminder Plugged that if you give people positive support and opportunities they generally make it ....What was the last positive you had to offer?plugger66 wrote:WinnersOnly wrote:Good luck to him I hope he makes it - it will be another reminder to the SAINTS on how poor their player development was under the LYON era ...

Yep you are always positive. Sorry but I hardly say a negative thing unless of course not bagging everything is negative. By the way what has Walsh done and didnt Ball get offerred a contract. Another negative post from you.

Thought Lynch was a fair player, a tad regulation paced (like everyone else in the team under Lyon) a decent size and could have been given a bit more of a go.
However to compare him to Gwilt is comparing apples to oranges. Gwilt was picked up by Beveridge from Noble Park having never gone through the TAC process of grooming.
For many years he was seen as a folly as he got lost on the field and didn't really have a set position. Took him five years to learn footy in the AFL context but was persisted with because he is 6'3" in the old measurements and is big bodied.
Lynch came out of the TAC environment so the five years you speak of is moot, however i do agree he will be a decent AFL footballer. Would have been interesting to see how he would have measured up under Watters in this current team. Bit of a shame really IMO.
Lance or James??

Re: Tom Lynch kicks three
Gwilt was playing in the EFL seniors at 17 in a much tougher environment than TAC cup.....he did not play in the TAC cup Because his sole focus at 16 wasnt AFL footy, he played a number of sports, most notably cricket for South Melbourne. He also was a great student who prioritized his studies.
He was always a great footballer, the best by a shitload at his school, and was already a very good senior player for noble....winning BOG in the premiership in 04. His kicking skills his best weapon. He is 6'2" in the old and perhaps his biggest query was his endurance due to a more rugby like body shape, reminds me of Piva Wright who is at Richmond atm....so IMO he was more footy advanced than most 18 year olds, but fitness was an issue....how many 18yo kids dominate an interstate final.
IMO gwilt is a smart footballer who makes good decisions and has the skills to execute....
Slotting into a set position was more challenging....like most 187-190cm players he needed to find a niche, Goddard was no different....
Sam Gilbert is IMO the opposite....tall skinny athletic, good hands.....poor skills, poor decision maker
Lynch Is the old fashioned footballer......smart, creative, knows where to run.....skills are just OK! Not blessed with pace, but a good motor.....
