Yes he did.
As a defender.

would have been hard pressed to get back into that midfield... Hawthorn were struggling at the time
he won a best and fairest at hawthorn....and is still playing good footy today at 33 years of age....
let me try that again

as a young kid coming off a serious career threatening injury, he would have felt hard pressed to break back into the saints midfield at the time.

hence he went to a weaker team (at the time)

He still went for the money.

Joel Smith told me that the St Kilda medicos were not confident he would play again. Saints offered him a one year contract, he didnt want to leave according to him. As I said earlier his father was his manager and got him a better contract at Hawthorn.

Lappin got the boot didn't he? He didn't walk, from my recollection. (10 years is an awful long time)

Reminds me of the complaint that an injured Nicky Winmar made when he was left alone at VFL Park and had to find a taxi and make his own way to hospital.
The club just poo hooed his complaint.

There were some real self centred sh1ts running the club in the 1990s.
Only cared for their social life and not for the players.

We have got our hands on A Smith but we can't get our hands on the Ball.

I don't hate either of them.
Both made decisions that they obviously felt were the best option for themselves.

But IIRC Smith (or his people) never bagged the Saints and/or the coach on his way out.
