Which umpire saw it?ace wrote:The umpire saw it.
He paid a free kick but did not consider it worthy of reporting.
Not reporting it means that the umpire assessed what he saw to be less than negligent.

What I saw was Gardiner giving chase to a Melbourne player making off with the ball and another Melbourne player initiating contact with Gardiner in an attempt to protect the ball carrier.
Gardiner was going in a straight line after the player with the ball and mustering pace by expanding his elbows - if you try to really push off you immediately raise your arms to pump. You do not reach top pace with your arms tucked in at mid-riff level. You propel yourself with your arms pumping and your elbows out.
The other Melbourne player had Gardiner as his target.
And there was incidental contact between Gardiner's elbow and the Melbourne player's head - as the Melbourne player's body made contact with Gardiner's body including by the Melbourne player lowering his centre of gravity for the contact.
The Melbourne player was not at full height as was Gardiner - they are approximately the same height so, in the normal course, Gardiner would have had to have his elbow extended at right angles to make contact with the head. He did not. It was raised, not extended.
As the Melbourne player lowered his centre of gravity for the contact Gardiner's obvious instinct was to forearm him off at shoulder level - and the Melbourne player came in at under that height and bent primed for contact - versus Gardiner upright and chasing.
That is what I saw.
Mind you the pace of both Gardiner and the Melbourne player was absolutely sizzling compared to the problems exiting the ground - then there were the non-existent services!
Just as well there were no more than 9,000 there - would still be trying to get out!
And would have starved to death by now!!
Shocking presentation and they will need to improve markedly on that effort.

It was frustration coming to the surface and he will learn from it.
On the positive side it is a good thing if he can get it out of his system early-- shows he has high expectations about his ability. Will be missed if even for one week.
A Saint Forever!
