Oliver as well. Young bull. He and Petracca are both elite.samoht wrote: ↑Wed 17 Nov 2021 5:36pm What makes the Demons formidable, is it their key backs, their key forwards or their awesome midfield and their run and skills in general all over the ground?
Fritch, Petracca and Salem stood out.
The Demons had too much run and zip at the end.
And even for the Bulldogs, Treloar and Bontempelli managed to kick 3 goals each.
It's all these running players that play the biggest role.
Not so much the spine.

The Doggies weakness is at either end of the ground. Alex Keith is the sole key defender of note. Naughton is a target in the forward line but is not consistent enough. Tim English isn't good enough yet to be a key forward or ruck.samoht wrote: ↑Wed 17 Nov 2021 5:36pm What makes the Demons formidable, is it their key backs, their key forwards or their awesome midfield and their run and skills in general all over the ground?

They missed Josh Bruce after he was injured.
Melbourne have a very solid defence and multiple key forward targets. A team's midfield will always look better when they have clear targets going forward - the old "straightens them up" line. And it's a bonus when those targets can mark and convert.
Both tems in the GF had great midfields but the difference was the ability to convert up forward.
The fact that Treloar and Bontempelli kicked over half the Bulldogs goals and one one goal came from a key forward speaks volumes. The Dogs defence couldn't stop the Demons forwards. Fritsch 6, Brown 3, McDonald 2, Jackson 1.

The Bulldogs matched Melbourne in overall disposals over the entire match.
But Melbourne was a little bit more efficient and their playmakers also had control of the ball for a fair bit longer .
Stats show that the ball was in Melbourne's possession 44% vs 39% for the Bulldogs (that leaves 27% when the ball was in transit) - so they were able to pick the better options.
Holding onto the ball longer and having that little bit extra time to assess things allowed Melbourne playmakers to do that (pick the better options) ... and that extra possession time also gave team mates a chance to run into space and present.
That's the beauty of having talented playmakers.
They also had Fritsch in the forward line causing headaches with his pace and taking marks inside 50.
The Demons had quite a few more inside 50's ... about 20 more?? ... and so it was inevitable that Brown and McDonald would eventually take a couple of grabs at the end, when Melbourne absolutely dominated and the result was beyond doubt.
Melbourne had the best runners/playmakers all over the ground ... this is where/how the game was won. Not only in the midfield.
The spine had little to do with the result.
The ball was basically in Melbourne's forward half ... in the second half.

If only a domination of inside 50's meant a win. Even over the past two years, Melbourne have quite often significantly won the i50 count only to easily lose the match.
Their midfield has never had trouble winning the ball and getting inside 50. They've just not had the forward line to take advantage of it.
We have also suffered over the last few years (prior to 2020) of the same issue many times.

Fittest team in the competition, hardly an injury to speak of all year, had a week's break leading into the GF, with a dominant ruckman playing against a broken down warrior labouring under the strain of insufficient fitness and a young pup lacking any aggression or intensity.

It could be argued that Lever, May and Salem were as important as any of their players.
Their actual Midfield was elite in the starting group, but didn’t actually run that deep.
Petracca, Oliver, Vivey - Inside
Brayshaw and Langdon - Wing
Then who??
2 key injuries in the starting midfield and all of a sudden they are average

1 key injury in their midfield (Petracca/Oliver) and they could be in a little trouble

They'll have Dunstan as a back up.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Seems that Dr Benge didn’t nominate for a Board position and Jason Blake did

We nearly beat them last year - and probably did as I reckon that last goal in the Alice was touched on the line, and we matched em at stages this year.st.byron wrote: ↑Wed 17 Nov 2021 10:34pmOliver as well. We beat the Dogs twice including a final last year. Let's see what happens if we play those sides with a full team next season. My money's on us.

Re: Wealthy St Kilda figure Gerry Ryan and former coach Grant Thomas endorse Larry Benge to join Saints board
The nomination of dental surgeon Larry Benge for a place on the Board of St Kilda FC has obviously not eventuated as the notice of the Virtual AGM received from the club yesterday states that the 3 vacancies will be declared with only 3 nominees: Dean Anderson, Jack Rush and Jason Blake.
I'd say that Thomas and Ryan are likely to have had some of their grievances resolved in private discussions with Andrew Bassat.

Is it? Seems to have given GT an opportunity to remain relevant to the media & St Kilda. Hard to be a beat up by the media without quotes by a certain party.

Yep.
And doesn't reflect well on the reporter, GT or the dentist.
Some strong derogatory words used, demonstrably well out of date and irrelevant to current sop.
GT and Dentist did not put up, so now need to shut up.
"Reporter" adopted the stenographer approach - sloppy - even if accurately transcribed.
Follow up story about how Board appointments were seamless and harmonious? lets not hold our breath. And excellent financial results not newsworthy don't you know.

I don’t agree.Ghost Like wrote: ↑Fri 26 Nov 2021 9:01pmIs it? Seems to have given GT an opportunity to remain relevant to the media & St Kilda.
GT has just received heaps of publicity after selling his company for $116 million. I doubt he hankers for more publicity.
IMO some of the media and some on here do not understand the difference between endorsing a candidate as director on a Board of 9 and a Board coup. If you want a board coup the last thing you would do is make it all public on the back of trying to appoint one person.
JB is a great appointment as a Board member. GT would be rapt. His mantra has always been for passionate and committed saints’ people in the club which JB is in spades.
I think Bassat will eventually be known as the best president we have ever had. He has just managed our financial work-out. He dealt with our performance collapse during the year without throwing Ratts and others into the fire unlike Saintsational which exploded. He gave respect to GT without being threatened. The new independent board appointment is acceptable to all.
Bassat is a gun.
