Right result, given the timeframe and and everything else.

FWIW, was finishing up in Court when the report of the decision came in and all those around the bar table agreed it was the right outcome given the circumstances.

If only everyone hadn't had to go through the intervening 10 or so years.

I'm just glad this farce is finally over. An absolute disgrace that it lasted this long. Incompetence, expedience, grandstanding etc. As an ex detective/investigator, I cannot believe how poorly this was handled. I always have sympathy for alleged victims, but in this case it seems that Milne's status as a sporting celebrity, led to his downfall. If he had've been Joe "average", this whole case would've died a quick death at the time.

Milne would have gone unpunished by pleading that he was tempted by the women.

it is a known fact that Malthouse is not well educated. he bluffs his way through with folksy pseudo-intellectualism and poorly reasoned revisionist history and poor and out of context quotes.

What you saw from Malthouse that night was the real Malthouse, an under educated, Neanderthal.

"After 10 years of being baited as a “rapist”, Milne has been fined for the lesser charge of indecent assault. That puzzles a former detective who has followed the case closely.

“Either he’s guilty of rape or he’s guilty of nothing,” he says of Milne, suggesting the indecent assault conviction is a legally-finessed compromise to quell criticism of police and prosecutors. “If he had been Joe Average this would never have gone ahead.”

What complicated the case, he says, is that partisan police (meaning St Kilda barrackers) were not content “to let it die a natural death” but heavy-handedly tried to intervene on Milne’s behalf. Thereby proving that not all football club groupies are young and female. Some are club committeemen and some wear blue uniforms.

Attempting to “help” Milne was a bad move. Any perception of police interference guaranteed that the case would be aired publicly and at length, putting pressure on both sides and on the authorities. The result was a sort of nil-all draw, a compromise that lets everyone pretend justice has been done."
