I wasn't born so doesn't hurt to me. The 97 GF still hurts me -I was there at my first GF and we had a team that should have won on paper, we were up and still fell apart.

Colling (i think) had kept him to a couple of kicks playing off half forward, and he was moved to Full Forward for last quarter. Cant remember if Colling went with him or not, but the rest as they say is history. Long ride home that night on the train.

Have been to them all (except 1966) and 1971 still stings just as hard as 97,09,10 & 10. nearly forgot 1965, had the pleasure of that beauty to.

Always have seemed keen to trade players between both clubs as well. Didn't the saints miss out on picking up Leigh Matthews by just a street or two?
was that brereton?

The zones weren't particularly kind to us.
Though we did pick up one or two "useful" players from our Ballarat country zone!

But many of the suburbs that should have been part of our heartland were zoned to Hawthorn and produced nuggets while we got spicks.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!

Man Hudson was a ponce. Cant believe he kicked so many goals. We had Barry Lawrence on him who was giving away some inches. Hudson could kick . Ill give him that. But he didnt look very athletic at all. Just like a big goofy dandy.

Hudson was one of the best readers of play I ever had the privelege of watching and would then position himself accordingly. Rarely missed from within 50 metres. Have met him a couple of times through a mutual friend, nice person.

Peter Hudson is not only the best FF to play, but also one of the top ten players of all time. To give you some idea, if Peter Hudson had played the same number of games as Tony Lockett, he would have beaten him by 223 goals - that is - he was at least two seasons better. Peter Hudson had that one characteristic that Tony Lockett lacked - temperament. Only John Coleman is anywhere near Peter Hudson in the terms of goals per game. Both Peter Hudson and John Coleman had curtailed careers with knee injuries. Up until about 1980, a pcl or acl ended your career. Pcl's are still problematic - just ask Aaron Hamill and Luke Penny.

And on the scoreboard :
St Kilda 8 9
Hawthorn 4 5

it's even worse when you think that our ninth behind was a poster (they didn't miss that one) from Barry Breen, and just minutes after that photo was taken, just before three quarter time, Leon Rice (the only Hawthorn player in their forward fifty) kicked the ball towards the goal from the boundary line on his wrong foot. It bounced through. It was a portent of things to come.
