From a financial viability perpective, made worse by sky-rocketing Football Department costs, Melbourne has too many Clubs. In tough times, business and supporters cut their spending, but AFL Club spending keeps increasing. Things will get worse.

Look overseas, it's about one team per city.

My concern regarding our current poor financial situation, is that the Club has done virtually nothing to develop successful "non-football" revenue, which will be the key in future, to remaining viable.
I'm not sure that's true, Melbourne is a footy mad city. The social fabric of this city and the credibility of the administration requires an almost religious respect.

The AFL is not like comps that have owners that require profit over anything else. We have a socialist system that not only allows access for the strugglers but aids them to climb from the hole.

Completely disagree JO. Look at the English Premier League for example.... (populations from 2001 Census data)

North West England (population = 6.7 million)

Manchester United and City, Liverpool, Everton, Blackburn, Bolton, Wigan

London (population = 7 million)

Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Fulham, QPR

West Midlands (population = 5.3 million)

Stoke, Aston Villa, West Brom, Wolves

North East England (population = 2.5 million)

Newcastle, Sunderland

Footy clubs and the AFL should stick to what they are best at.... playing footy for people to watch. Collingwood have lost a heap on property and pubs over the last decade. Most other clubs outside sources of income are poker machine related, which in my view is morally wrong and on a par with bookmakers, brothels and cigarette manufacturing.

Also note that there are only two clubs in the EPL who do not have a 'local rival' also in the EPL - Swansea and Norwich - though they do have local rivals in Ipswich and Cardiff. Which backs up the AFL's plan of introducing GWS and Gold Coast.

I think I am like most fans when I say if they dropped the rest of melbourne's teams outside the top 3 (collingwood, carlton and essendon), I would stop watching.

Relocation may happen one day but they need to let the fans get over the pain of new teams first.

What about our former zone of Ballarat.Reckon we could get Tasmanian sized crowds there, wonder what number would create a profit in a smaller stadium?

Don't know how much they expected from 2nd jumper sponsor, but during tough financial times would it be viable to sell say 4week jumper rights?
Many companies may baulk @ a season commitment of say $4ook but could realistically look @ $80k or so for 4 weeks, even a fair bit more for finals exposure.

The govt is banning live Odds as at June 2012.

This will impact TV advertising revenue which in turn hurts the AFL.

Morally, it's a sound idea, but footy needs as much gambling revenue as it can get, until another revenue stream is found to replace it IMO.

Sarah Galbally, a commercial law specialist who joined St Kilda last year to help it deal with its off-field problems, has left the club.

Galbally, the niece of prominent QC David Galbally, joined the Saints in January last year in a list management role and also to provide legal advice for player-related issues.

Galbally's departure at Christmas came just weeks after she completed a review of membership in a new role as general manager of consumer business.
