Bergholt has a point well made.
The last thing we need is any more half bank flankers.
There are only 2 in a 22 man team and we seem to have about 10.

ok, so current picks are actually:

25
37
42
60

assuming we promote walsh and demote heyne then we can either do:

25 - new player (replacing already delisted player)
37 - new player (replacing already delisted player)
42 - walsh (replacing heyne who moves to the rookie list)
60 - unused

or:

25 - new player (replacing already delisted player)
37 - new player (replacing already delisted player)
42 - new player (replacing a player still on the list)
60 - walsh (replacing heyne who moves to the rookie list)

so we would only delist another player if the player we'd get at 42 is better than them. or we could trade another player for a pick higher than 42, again assuming that the player we'd get at the pick is better than them.

of course, salary cap considerations may make it essential to get rid of another established player, which means we'd trade or delist with less chance of a better replacement.

Gaertner was not a Rookie in 2012

He quit at the end of 2011

Archer is a rookie. But yes I assume that Pelchen will give our Rookie list a fair going over.
Walsh elevated.
Ferg kept...or elevated.

Cahill, Heyne and Gamble look the most likely. Our two trades look to have doomed Gamble who did not look good enough anyway.

The other point with gamble is that he lacks versatility.
And pacey options are now available to replace him.

If those 3 go..then that is 7 out.

2 in so far.

Unless we trade the picks we look to have lowish picks in the draft that would be used.

You need depth...and so Polo may be kept.

With Ben now our sole rue ruckman...Pelchen will want a back-up plan in case Ben gets injured. Stanley is not robust enough yet.

I expect a mature age player from a non-AF club to be picked up.

Polo maybe but he's good back up in the middle
Agree on Polo.

The other three would need another club to want them.

With Ray...I must rate him higher than most for I think he is a valuable part of our 22.
Ray has shown he has the capability but has dramatically dropped off the pace this year - not sure if that comes from being given a role. Ross may have taken to heart his tagging role in the GF 2010.

how many half-back flankers can you fit into one side?

here's who played there at afl level this year:

blake
clarke
dempster
fisher
geary
gilbert
goddard
gram
gwilt
ray
simpkin

these players could also have legitimately played there:

gamble
johnson
lynch
polo
winmar
ferguson?

half-back flank is the fall-back position - for example, see leon davis. you don't need to be too accountable, you don't have to think too much because the ball comes to you, you've got license to run around a bit without doing too much damage.

there's a limit to the number of players we can have whose best position is half-back flank.
Your point on HBFers highlights our lack of KPPs or KKPs that are fit and in form.

He was renowned for his good disposal when he was drafted - perhaps with a bit more confidence from his coaches he can show this in the AFL.

For mine, I would this

With Gardiner, Baker, Mini and Lynch already gone...

I would delist

Heyne
Gamble

Then do my best to trade off
Ray
Jones (ducks to avoid tomatoes throw by forumites)
Gilbert

And then depending on the outcome...
that would seal A. Smith's spot... I don't really know him well enough to make a call.

I would keep Gram and Blake for back up

Put the hard word on both Peake and Polo... last season to fix ur disposal... consider ur papers stamped

would keep Cahill and Johnson

I'd like to see Gram go for a decent draft pick...I want the fabric of the side to change and this would help with that....

For a decent trade... any player in this team could/would go

I love Goodard but say the first 2 picks ths season and pick 1 next and I be seriously considering flicking him (footy is a fickle beast).

Gram's the type of player whose best is clearly behind him but atm is still able to bring a lot more to the team then a number of other similar position players e.g. Ray

Ideally some like him should be winding down his career with more time at Sandy whilst the Cripps', Winmars, Ledger's etc play a bit more

BigMart wrote:The way I see it...

We need to add a minimum of Three Draft Picks (4 likely)....We have already added two players...Saad, Milera....and if we want to elevate Walsh, we need to open up another space...

That is 6 additions (possibly 7)

With 4 gone....Lynch, McQualter, Gardiner, Baker

There needs to be two (or 3) more delisted

We have Already got
Pick 25
Pick 37
Pick 39??
Pick 58??

if we trade more players for picks...it has to be with a view of upgrading current picks or they will not be used....

so if we let go of, say
Peake or Ray or Dawson or whoever is uncontracted it would need to be for a better pick than the last one we were going to use....

at this stage unless we delist a few, our third pick at 40ish will be our last
Mate, I don't understand your math, but that's coz I don't completely understand the system/rules. Can you explain them to me?

For example: We need to add a minimum of Three Draft Picks (4 likely)....We have already added two players...Saad, Milera....and if we want to elevate Walsh, we need to open up another space...

THEREFORE
That is 6 additions (possibly 7)

My math says needing 3 or 4, minus 2 already sourced (or do they not count?), leaves 1. 4 guys leave, means 5 players more required.

? I don't get it.

I think they'll lose Gram, he'd be on pretty big money, 28 next year, queries on his pace? Bit of interest from North and Carlton (if you believe the media).

Taking Bergholts point a step further, currently we have Picks
25
37
42
60
78
96
There is no way known we will use the later picksexcept to upgrade a rookie. But we do need to improve the pick we already have. So we should be throwing inone of these picks with a player, to sweeten the deal.
