This one's gaining legs.

I rate Dermie on game analysis he's very good. So to give an endorsement to Watters is good.

from our own sad experience and from what Neeld or McCartney said- they were asked... by the club looking..

There is a certain irony in the fact we're all hoping for a little more attacking football next year, and Watters is a defensive coach. :)

109 games at AFL level.
Delisted after 46 games with the Eagles; then played 37 in Sydney before going home to WA when the Dockers started up. Averaged about 18 touches per game. Plenty of quality coaches were never stars however most of this breed were renowned as tough competitors... Laidley, the Scotts, Yabby Jeans, David Parkin... and even dare I say it , Ross Lyin was a pretty intense footballer. My memory of Scotty Watters is of a second string outside receiver with frizzy hair and stumpy legs. An unlikely Messiah and personally I'd prefer Conan or Banger but I guess whoever is 'the chosen one' deserves our full support.

excellent. i saw the work he did at subi in the wafl.

as far as hostory goes. subi always made finals but never made the grand final. they did once and got smashed when buckenara was coach. the board eventually got sick of getting so close but so far so they poached peter german who was coaching peel.

german had immediate impact and lifted the level of professionalism required of the players. he eventually got subi the elusive flag. watters was appointed after german resigned to pursure afl opportunities.

watters was very good but he inherited a great list. however he has an amazing raport from everyone at subi.

watters will be a great senior coach. its just a question of if he is ready now or if he needs to spend more time at other afl clubs.

if he is appointed i would look at bringing in another older coach for him to bounce ideas off.

would love to see german at the saints in some capacity. would also love to see maxy come back.

Took over a premiership side at Subiaco in The WAFL from Peter German, (currently coaching in the VFL). German coached them to flags in 2004-2006 and Watters won three in a row from 2007.
Senior players at Subi = Michael Rix & Des Headland.
So a great coaching record at a lower level. You'd have to line that up with Ayres amazing effort with Port Melbourne this year or giving a living legend a go and harnessing the support of former greats such as happened at Essendon this year.

He won 2 from 3 and lost in 2009.......subiaco won 4 in 6 years.....german built an increible team and watters continued with them...

The WAFL is a small step down from the VFL.....who easily beats the WAFL with 60% of the best players unavailable due to being on afl lists....

Having said that....coaching flags is importnt whatever level

Maccartney, neeld both coached successfully at contry level....experience your own team is crucial....assisstant coaches only have FA experience in resposibility.....they are not steering the ship or in the drivers seat.....

So he ticks that box......

And on his playing career.....he was an absolute star junior.....a knee injury in 1990......He left west coast after not getting in the gf team in 91....best years in sydney....runner up best and fairest there....joined the dockers on their inception as their innaugrial vice captain....
He was no gumby

I don't share your generous assessment of Scott Watters as an AFL player. He was never a superstar in the mould of Blight, Matthews or Hird or a tough, uncompromising winner like Sheedy, Worsfold or Hafey. Nor do I believe that he is a clearly superior candidate for a senior coaching position. Other AFL clubs; Melbourne, Footscray and Adelaide; have already looked at him and moved on to make other selections in 2011. This is not to say that he won't be a great senior coach but more to point out that he is not the personification of the second coming of Norm Smith.

Not sure anyone was saying he was a star.....were they....he played 110 games....and was a runner up b&f at a bottom team..

And the second coming of norm smith.....how was that conclusion is drawn...we are discussing whether or not he would be even suitable as an afl senior coach...

The second coming of norm smith would need little discussion

Peter German was very good when he coached Burnie in north west Tasmania in the statewide league in the 1990's.

I know stuff all about the candidates to be honest but there is a fair buzz about Watters.

However I would take anything Dermie says about him with a grain of salt. I heard him on SEN last week talk Watters up like there is no tomorrow but he did start it with "I'm not just saying this because he is a close friend but............................."

Yeah thanks Dermie, the guy that said Robert Harvey went on too long…

All from the mouth of a guy who hobbled around with 2 absolute rabble clubs well after his time in the sun.
