right now - the club do need to work through the process- No time for hysteria and too much angst - as it will only prove there is no control-
what most of us would want is Cool heads
AW now
Strange comment considering Lyon and Freo conspired to break his contract.
maybe that is the only swipe that Nettlefold could bring himself to do.
Nettlefold to speak on MMM in 5 minutes (around 7.20AM EST)

Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.
Blight didnt want to coach, MM still does. Of course we should approach him. There are probably plenty of assistants under contract that we are going to approach. That is basically all MM will be next year.Dr Spaceman wrote:I personally don't want Malthouse.Ice Wolf wrote:I very much doubt the club would approach Malthouse before Collingwood's season is over, I'll assume that is all Nettleford meant in regards to that.
But that aside, if he was to come to St Kilda I'd want his people to be coming to us about it. They know the job's available.
MM is under contract and has said he won't be coaching next year. I don't want to drag him Blighty style into the place.
If he wants it then he should come and get it.

The silliness of people thinking lets get Malthouse is Malthouse is part of a machine that is Collingwood.
They have the recruiting structures up and running.
They get the kids they are developed properly in their system.
Then there are a few assistant coaches(That everybody wants)
There is Malhouse.
They have a bunch of CEOs (That everybody wants)
And Eddie is pretty switched on himself.
Paying Malthouse a squillion and then not bringing in his infrustructure and having that duplicated will destroy the club
Footy has changed.
So if you want a succesful football side, buy a membership and go to the games.

Sounds like there is point in chasing any coaches then.St Igmata wrote:The silliness of people thinking lets get Malthouse is Malthouse is part of a machine that is Collingwood.

But Malthouse can leave Collingwood - he just can't coach at another club?
Why couldn't he be employed by us next year as a boot studder who is welcomed into the box each week by the Head Coach Robert Harvey, then he takes over as head coach in 2013?
Anyway, modern footy tells us that you pinch flags. I think it's changed in that regard.
Game plans win flags now. And apart from Malthouse, it's always a new coach that comes along and catches the rest of the comp off guard. They either copy the team's style that is the best at the time - then improve on it or tweak it, or it's something brand new. Once their players hit that age and experience bracket where they're capable of playing it for 4 quarters together, they can wi the flag.
The other thing about this is, that once you've been worked out, you're often done as a coach.
Roos did it. Then was done. Thompson did it, then was done. Pagan even did it then he was done. Williams did it, then he was done. Clarkson did it, he isn't done yet but there's no guarantee that his new style of footy will win a flag. Lyon almost did it, and could be done. Malthouse is the only one in modern times who has implmented a game plan that was successful, then was worked out - but then reinvented a game plan that was ahead of the comp again.
So really, I think the recipe for success these days is to get a really good, respected, hard working, smart assistant coach who has seen other good coaches game plans up close.
Clarkson. Lyon. Williams. Roos. Worsfold. Thompson.
Get him in, let him slowly build the list and implement his plan. Then buckle in for the bumpy ride whilst we wait for it to come together, then cross our fingers that it falls into place on GF day!
This is no time to panic in my opinion. For me, it's actually really exciting.
Lyon's game plan was done. It was outdated. He had to change it to outsmart the comp again. He was up against history to be able to achieve that.

The point is.
He is not the best coach...
He is in the best system.
Best coach he would be if he was in the same system as everyone else.. had the same players as everyone else and had the same draw and injuries.
He does ok in all those things.
Took him 20 years between flags.
There are more to the flags at Collingwood than just Malthouse.

And it took 21 years for the pies to win a flag with all those great things in place.St Igmata wrote:The point is.

It's Collingwood's game plan that has them with a flag and the team to beat again.St Igmata wrote:The point is.

Their players are overrated really. Obviously they some superstars, but so did North when they didn't have a cent - and so do/did we.
Dawes is a very average player on his own. Luke Ball might not even be that good!
But put these players into a team where they are super fit, super committed and have a game plan that is precedented in the way it defends like Sydney in 05 then scores like Geelong in 07 up the other end!
I don't care how many CEO's you have (still not sure how you have more than one?), how many recruiting guys you have or how many boot studders you have - the most important thing is being fit, healthy, committed, and have a game plan that other teams haven't worked out yet. Oh, and a little luck too!
Collingwood didn't need 900 recruiters and a $700m player development plan to get Jolly and Ball!
Fitness and player's health may be the 1 area where money separates Collingwood from the rest. But having said that, Geelong have beaten them twice and they don't fly to Arizona every 2nd day to train.

One person who looked pretty silly (honourable yet silly) last night was Gary Lyon. Basically peddled out the Nettlefold line when talking about the Demon's dealings with Lyon. I wonder who put out all of those smoke screens about Lyon going to the Dees? It was enough for the media and betting agencies to get on board...
With Thompson last year, Lyon this year, its obvious a 'contract' for a coach means very little and we should be doing everything (behind closed doors) to get Mick. Coaches walk if they want, they coach if they want, they get paid out if they get sacked.
