They actually had a couple from the family playing with us back then.
Residentially bound Essendon supporters I believe?
The father's first cousin Mark Schulberg was a seconds player (KPP) who looked very likely to play in our seniors but broke his leg very badly and retired.
He went on to have a stellar career in the Amateurs.

I think McEvoy is progressing beautifully.
I do, however, fear for his physical wellbeing.
He has shouldered a massive load for a young ruckman this year. That he's mostly shone is an absolute credit to him, but them's bones must be achin'...
And I agree with posters who suggest (more or less) that his performance was on par with Goldsteins. The hitout count was one thing, but McEvoy's marking power and back half poise more than made up for a few set shots that he should have lined up and had a crack at.
Will be a gun.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

HS Supercoach points are far more relevant and useful than Dreamteam...The OtherThommo wrote:According to the HS Goldstein had 138 'whatever it is points'. McEvoy had 141. Goddard game high 161, Dal Santo 139.BigMart wrote:Goldstean was named their best player

Dreamteam is based purely on stat count alone (including hitouts), whereas supercoach ranking are far more complicated and accurate to a players performance...
So, McEvoy had the superior game...
Re: McEvoy long-term
herald sun had McEvoy with 25 hit outs (28% to adv), which means 7 hit outs to adv. Goldstein had 47 hit outs (17% to adv), which means 8 hit outs to adv. so they basically split that. Big Ben beat Goldstein in stats around the ground, Goldstein kicked a goal. pretty even result. wouldn't mind both of them.Teflon wrote:Thats weird I did too. Looking at those stats Goldstein appears to have murdered him.....watching the game live I felt McEvoy had greater impact.....I may have to use 2 eyes from now on...Legendary wrote:Round 10 vs. Fremantle (Griffin). He's playing brilliantly around the ground but is consistently smashed in the hit-outs and the hit-outs to advantage.
Round 11 vs. Collingwood (Wood). Won hitouts 38-34.
Round 12 vs. Bulldogs (Hudson). Lost hitouts 20-22.
Round 13 vs. Geelong (Ottens). Won hitouts 37-26.
Round 15 vs. Kangaroos (Goldstein). Lost hitouts 45-25.
I'm sorry, but he is not constantly "smashed" in the hitouts. He has improved enormously in this area, and is breaking even or winning in most matches over the last 5-6 weeks.
In fact his result against Goldstein tonight was his worst all year, and yet I thought he was the more dominant ruckman on the ground.

To further show his improvement ...
In 2010, McEvoy averaged 11 hitouts per game from 19 games (playing mostly second ruck to Gardiner).
In 2011, McEvoy is averaging 23 hitouts per game (playing as #1 ruck). This is more than the 17 hitouts per game that Gardiner averaged last year.
In his first 5 games in 2011, McEvoy averaged 18 hitouts per game.
In his most recent 7 games, he is averaging 26 hitouts per game.
There is absolutely no doubt that his ruckwork has improved dramatically since last year, and improved considerably since his first few games this year.
So far this season, McEvoy has the highest number of hitouts per game of any ruckman to play for St Kilda since Peter Everitt in 2001.
