If you cant contend for a flag then IMO that is shut the window time. This side isnt going to suddenly be better next year because 6 young kids have played 5 games each. Most players need at least 3 years to become guys who will actually help win you guys especially when they are high draft picks like we have had in the last few years. In 3 years time Rooy will probably be close to retirement. Lenny will have probably retired. Milny gone. Dal, Joey and Fish past their best. It is shut as far as I can see.

shutting a window means there is not 1% of a chance of getting a flag
not ONE PERCENT (the minimum) of getting a shot in another GF

probability says there is always a chance
we won 19 straight, did we win the flag?? nope
so therefore there is as much chance as winning one if you won 12 for the season

the window is shut when you are bottom and your best performing 5 or 6 players are out with a year long injury
then the windows shut imo

Well logic to me says if we are going backwards this year with an aging list then logically we arent going to suddenly come good next year and win the flag. Id rather you be right than me but I cant see it, even slightly as you suggest.

No doubt the boys gave 110% effort last nihght. "But the skills."

I know that it is very easy to look back in hindsoight, but this is what I put on a thread as far back as December last year.

"Looking at last year's clangers and suggested player positional movement, there seems to be a need for a specialist Kicking Skills Coach, even if only for the pre-season. Alternatively, a lot more practice built into training programmes.

It's called "foot"ball. Any thoughts?"

I firstly blame the Recruiters for getting so many with poor skills. Next, I blame the Football Dep't. for not putting in enough time on the track to improve the poor kickers that we know. I was simply in awe of the Geelong kicking skills last night. :!:

its not looking good, yes, any wally can see that, but there is a chance

Couldn't of been, they're our bottom 6.
Bottom 6 can't play well?

Tried our guts out, had a few rough calls and the runner incident,
They just had a bit more class when finishing, our skills are looking ordinary,
I thought we would go down by about 6 goals so 4.5 is ok in my book…
I thought the same... wasn't counting on a win.

But... if you had told me that we would win the tackle count, clearances, hitouts, and more or less break even in contested possessions, I would have imagined a win, or at least a close loss.

Our kicking, decision making, and positioning were worth a 6+ goal difference.

The frustrating bit is, I approached the game thinking tackle count, clearances, hitouts, and contested possessions were our weaknesses... that we could wear the rest. Clearly not.

Its amazing isnt it?

I too thought if we can win contested posession , break even in clearances etc we'd be right in it...................had no idea deplorable skills/decision making was 6 goals.......plus umpires...it has to be said.

No wonder Lyon was so frustrated. Lyon clearly felt we were right in this game. His press statements tell us that. I did too even right up to about 12-15 mins left I felt we were right in this game...but again, a poor fwd decision entry or a Cats fast break stopped that.

I love how we are gone for all money and can't get back? FFS. We are developing a new game plan that is the opposite to what they have played the last few years. In the early part of the season we couldn't stop going back to a defensive flood to try to arrest a slide when we got a couple of goals down.

We are playing without Lenny all Australian superstar mid and our only clearance player since Ball left. Montagna has been suspended and injured half the season. Gilbert and Roo had a nightmare off season. Roo is coming back from tearing his hamstring from the bone and still looks unsure it will hold up. Dal santo is being forced back to replace Fishers kicking from defence. Schnieder, Kosi, Eddy all missed preseasons for injury or suspension. Geary broke his leg. Gram has not seemed to be free of restriction since injuries in last years finals. 2 guys with little experience have been used as our midfield generals. We aren't flying but it's hard to say we are gone completely, all lists need tinkering but there is good reason to think we have a decent crack at a reload more than a rebuild.

We exist on the same page. Well said.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'
