Well, if you combined Mini and Cripps into a single player on Sunday, you'd have had a good one.borderbarry wrote:I only saw the last couple of minutes of the match, so I am going from the write-ups and the stats and the SC points alotted in the Hun. There they gave 16 points to McQualter for 4 possessions and 1 tackle, and 21 points to Cripps for 6 possessions 2 tackles, and 2 goals. Both of these were Subs of course so only played half the game. Then they had Milne with 37, Dawson with 40, Gram with 41, Jones with 47 (6 tackles) and Polo 48, Steven 49 (7 tackles). then Baker and Dempster with 56 each. They gave 156 points to Sam Fisher, so these blokes above scored very badly.
From those figures you would have to say our worse in order were McQualter, Milne, Dawson, Gram, Cripps, Jones, Polo and Steven. Do those of you who actually were at the game agree with this order? And if so how many need to be dropped?
Essentially, Cripps got on the end of a couple of chains and converted them. In a half of football where he's playing as a forward and the ball never gets down there, that's not a bad return - it just doesn't address the key failings. Mini gets into the contest, but just wasn't winning enough of them. Beware when judging forwards on stats - it was a tough day for our forwards to collect them.
I think the tale gets told when you look at our top possession getters, and then look at the clearances.
The Saints best were probably Fisher (followed by daylight and more daylight), Dempster, Baker, Jones, and maybe Gwilt... good on them, but if that's the case, then we'll struggle.

OUT:
Baker, Dawson, McQualter, Dempster, Gilbert, Jones, Steven, Kosi, Gram
IN:
Smith, Johnson, Lynch, Simpkin, Walsh, Heyne, Archer, Winmar, Montagna
Ledger, Curren & Geary to play when fit…
Seriously we know exactly what guys getting a game are capable of, let's see if anyone from Sandringham is capable of better, if not we can always go back to trusty ol' McQualter & Kosi…
Let the tanking begin…

No i have come to the conclusion that a 30 loss is very bad for the club next year.dragit wrote:Keep thinking…plugger66 wrote:Dont see how 30 goal losses help us next year.dragit wrote:OUT:

Some guys 'float' when thrown in the deep end, others don't.
Sippos wasn't starring in the VFL, yet has looked the goods in his 2 games so far.
4 of our 6 goals after quarter time were from 18 year-olds with 3 games experience... what does that say about the rest of the side?
Give Heyne, Lynch and Geary a few games, if they aren't up to this level we can move them on.
Walsh would benefit from a taste at AFL level, Archer competes… and at the moment the others are not.

It needs to be done in a controlled organised and constructive manner.
You cant just bring in a bunch of guys from the VFL and have them smashed.
The problem is the experienced players need to show more mettle and pave the way for the younger guys to come in , in a controlled fashion.
These kids should be support cast.

You can not just pick "kids" - they need to be blended into the side and the real extent of the problem is that we have done precious little blending in of those on our list with minimal AFL games in the past few years.
We have continued with players who are on the decline - and granted they have given the club good service, but everyone has their use by date.
Over the past couple of years I have put that we have needed to move on from the likes of McQualter, Blake, Baker, Milne, Dempster (who was not the worst against Hawthorn it is conceded but that is not the issue) and Dawson.
And neither Geary or Eddy, who have had opportunities and have accrued 30 odd AFL games are anywhere near AFL level.
The positive from this year is that the likes of Smith, Siposs and Cripps have been given opportunity and have shown a bit - plus Steven and Armitage continue to gain experience.
This week Montagna is an automatic inclusion.
In terms of looking at VFL form, VFL is different footy to AFL footy.
All VFL footy shows is the appetite for the contest.
McQualter should now finally be gone.
Baker should be gone.
I would have Montagna in for McQualter and Clarke in for Baker (and leave him in because he is a confidence player - who isn't? - and needs to get that confidence to produce the very good footy he is capable of).
As a preference, I would like to Johnson at full back in place of Dawson.
From one TV game (poor vehicle), Walsh has a long way to go.
I noted Goddard off in the first quarter and looking in some difficulty walking the boundary - improving on the return walk.
If he and Gram are fit I would be surprised.
Both look like old men.
At least Koschitzke, off no pre-seaon, 1 VFL game and now 2 spaced out AFL games got around the ground quite reasonably.
And, if Lynch comes in it is for Dempster - both 191cm flank defenders but hopefully Lynch plays taller than Dempster.
And I would like to see one of the drafted mid-field runners (or Heyne?) in for Milne.
That would at least provide more mid-field rotation capacity and we may be able to defend that area better.

Like Jack.
Not everyone is the same, and can't be fixed in the same way.
Going head to head with an opponent worked for Gilbert, but it's not working for BJ.
Time to try something else.
How frustrated would he have got after quarter time on Sunday? Must be played at HBF because that is his best position and needs to at least be given a chance in his best position.SainterK wrote:Play him FF.Dr Spaceman wrote:Well if he needs a change, if he needs a break, why not give him a run as sub for a week?saintspremiers wrote:Yep, BJ either needs a run in the magoos or a week fishing in Darwin to freshen up his head.

it would take a brave selection panel to omit goddard from the team. but it's times like these where strong executive decisions are needed to be made. sure, the football world and press will be bleating over it, but it's none of their concern. a week in the seconds or perhaps just some badly needed respite from playing may turn out to be a refreshing spell for him.

Thats the spirit. Drop one of our better players in the last 2 games. We certainly dont want our players to actually think they will get rewarded for playing well. By the way where is Walsh actually going to play? And while we at it how has his form been in the last few games?mad saint guy wrote:If Lyon is still in denial
